To get thru a narrow alley, Bond tilts his car on wheels and wheel-ies to freedom. But that's all there is.

The film is padded with a depressing tour of Las Vegas action. A potentially good idea involving a Howard Hughes-type character is blown when the rich hermit turns out to be 30 years old. The quality of acting is amateurish, save for Connery and Bruce Cabot, who plays the reluctant billionaire's trouble shooter. A final helicopter attack is copied from previous films. With the release of "Diamonds Are Forever," the Bond market is definitely SPECTRE can't kill off James Bond, but "Diamonds Are Forever" just might.

The latest 007 adventure, with Sean Connery once again packing the Walther PPK pistol, is not merely bad Bond, it is a bad movie. A disjointed script competes with, of all things, a lack of action for responsibility for this failure. The women are unappealing even to Bond, judging from his lack of ardor and the villains are hardly threatening. And yet the story is promising always promising. In the opening scene before the titles, Bond threatens to strangle a woman with the top of her bikini, and suddenly "You Only Live Twice," the last Bond adventure with Connery, doesn't seem so far away.

Bond's assignment in this film is to find out who is hoarding diamonds on the international market. Many known smugglers aren't unloading their gems in the black market. Therefore, an unknown source must be buying them. The managers of the international diamond syndicate fear they will be vulnerable to blackmail if the mysterious hoarder can accumulate enough stones to credibly threaten to depress the market by selling all of his jewels at once. Bond's search takes him from Amsterdam, to Los Angeles, to Las Vegas, to off the coast of Baja California.

His principal female companion for the trip is a Miss Tiffany Case Jill St. John who TRIBUNE MINIREV1EW A rhinestone Vi "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER" Directed by Guy Hamilton, screanplay by Richard Maibaum and Tom Mankiewicl based on the Ian Fleming story, photo-graphed by Ted Moore, music by John Barry, produced by Albert R. Both women's libbers and male chauvinist pigs will find these babes unappealing the liberationists, because the characters exploit women, and the pigs because they don't exploit women enough. Frankly, the time has come for Bond to encounter a feminist or a flower child.

It would be great to see how he would handle them. The principal villains in "Diamonds" are a pair of gay caballeros who serve as henchmen for the mysterious hoarder. When not holding each other's hands, they are dropping such original lines as, "If God wanted man to fly he would have given him wings."
