THE SUN, BALTIMORE, SUNDAY MORNING. JULY 27, 1969 PAGE 18 W. Bates Hancock Dies; Wrote Prize Poem 'Quest' Mrs. W. Bates Hancock, prize-winning poet and a woman active in cultural and civic affairs, died yesterday at her home, 915 Belgian avenue.

She was 93 years old. A resident of Baltimore since 1941, she had formerly lived for many years in Pocomoke City, where she had been a poet for the Worcester Democrat. In 1945, the Society of American Poets awarded her its bronze medal, its highest award, The for her written poet "Quest." poem, memory her brother, Homer A. Bentley, went as follows: "I watch the pearly light of dawn, The gleam of stars at night, And wonder if somewhere in space, Your soul rests in its flight. "I feel the zephyr's soft caress, And ask the winds that blow If waves of universal breath Your spirit's pinions know.

Nelson, a retired Baltimore Gas Electric Company employee, will be held at 11 A A.M. tomorrow at the Hubbard funeral establishment, 4107 Wilkens avenue.

Mr. Nelson, who was 74, died Thursday at 'the Summit Nursing Home, Catonsville, after a long illness. He lived at 408 Swann avenue. An employee of the utility company for 30 years, he was a steamfitter at the Spring Gardens gas pipe fabricating plant when he retired in 1960. A native of Cambridge, his family brought him to Baltimore when he was a child.

He served in the Army during World War I and was a member of Union Masonic Lodge No. 60. He is survived by his wife, the former Annie M. Grimm; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian M.

Kline: two sisters, Mrs. Theola Cassell and Mrs. Thelma Snyder; two brothers, Arthur Nelson and Theodore Nelson, all of Baltimore, and a grandson. C. M.

Cunningham Funeral services for Clarence M. Cunningham, employee of Maryland race tracks, will be held at 10 A.M. tomorrow at the Strong funeral establishment, 3207 West North avenue. Mr. Cunningham, who was 67, died Thursday at Warsaw, N.Y., while on a bus trip to Niagara Falls with his wife.

He lived at 1101 1 St. Paul street. A native of Stewartstown, he was brought to Baltimore as a child. He is survived by his wife, the former M. Edith Carter.

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Helen V. Hancock, with whom she made her home, and a granddaughter, Mrs. V. C. Black, of Charlotte, N.C.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. tomorrow at the Singleton funeral establishment, Crane highway, Glen Burnie. Rites Are Set For Buckingham Funeral services for Francis E. Buckingham, a part-time movie theatre doorman, will be held at 1.30 P.M. tomorrow at the Hubbard funeral establishment, 4107 Wilkens avenue, Mr.

Buckingham, who was 60 and a resident of Arbutus, died Thursday of an apparent heart attack while attending a meeting of the Liberty Lodge No. 10, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he was a member. Because of a heart condition he had worked only part time for the past five years as a doorman at the Charles Theatre. He formelry was an order taker at Middleman Weise. A native of Philadelphia, his family brought to Baltimore when he was a child.

He is survived by his wife, the former Thelma E. Ridgely, and a sister, Miss Lillian E. 1 Buckingham, of Catonsville. Mrs. Hunt Selected As YWCA Director The Young Women's Christian Association of the greater Baltimore area has appointed Mrs.

W. Winston Hunt as its executive director. Mrs. Hunt, who will take over at the YWCA on September 1, is now working as a specialist in day care services at the Maryland Department of Social Services. Mrs.

Hunt, a native of Columbus, Ohio, has bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Ohio State University and the University of Pennsylvania. tomorrow at St. Dominic's Church. Mr. Bellistri, who was 92, died Wednesday at Union Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He lived at 4921 Harford road.

A native of Italy, Mr. came to Baltimore about 1911 and worked as a stone mason until he retired in 1945. He was a member of Bricklayers and Masons Local No. 1 of Maryland. His wife, the former Pieatrina Lucchesi, died in 1940.

Mr. Bellistri is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Josephine Palmieri and Mrs. Lena Koening; and three brothers, Samuel Bellistri, Carmelo Bellistri and Attilio Bellistri, all of Baltimore; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Yankellow Services Are Set; He Was Butcher 60 Years Funeral services for Yankellow, who was a kosher butcher in Baltimore for 60 years, will be held at 1 P.M.

today at the Levinson funeral establishment, 6010 Reisterstown road. Mr. Yankellow, who was 83, died Friday night at the Milford Mills. Nursing Home after a short illness. He lived on Keyworth avenue.

A native of Lithuania, Mr. Yankellow came to Baltimore in 1906 and opened a kosher butcher shop on Caroline street in East Baltimore. He later had stores on Madison avenue and Pall Mall road, retiring from the latter in 1966. In 1966, Mr. Yankellow was honored by the Hebrew Kosher Butchers Association as its oldest active member.

Sister Accepts Position Sister Mary Stephen, president of Villa Julie College at Stevenson, has accepted the chairmanship of a long-range planning committee of Baltimore's Higher Education Council on Urban Affairs. The purpose of the committee, according to Ross Jones, president of council, is to review the organization's record of the past two years, examine the present program and make recommendations for the next five years.

Former Baltimorean Ran School Lunch Program Waterboro, July 26 (Special)-Funeral services for James C. Kellam, a former employee of the United States Department of Agriculture in Baltimore, will be held here Sunday. Mr. Kellam died yesterday at his home in Orlando, Fla. Until his retirement about four years ago, he was a supervisor of the Department of Agriculture's school lunch program 1 in Baltimore.

He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Wichman; a daughter, Mrs. Clark Dougherty, of Cincinnati, a son, James C. Kellam, of Winter Park, two brothers, Robert S. Kellam, of Nassawadox, and E.M. Kellam, of Weirwood, a sister, Mrs.

P. A. Holland, of Nassawadox, and six grandchildren. A requiem mass for Maurice E. Bendall, a retired merchant marine captain, will be offered at 10 A.M.

Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church, Towson. Mr. Bendall, who was 56, died Thursday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center after a long illness. He lived at 3052 Oak Forest drive. A native of Matthews, Mr.

Bendall started in the merchant marine as an ordinary seaman when he was a young man. Once Coast Guardsman Sailing back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, he worked his way up, retiring as a captain 10 years ago after 31 years of service. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant junior grade in the Coast Guard, staItioned in Baltimore. After his retirement, Mr. Bendall lived in Phoenix, and operated a self-service laundry Ion Fleet street in Baltimore.
