BURTOn ISL BY WILL LEONARD IT WAS difficult writing a review of Fritz Kreisler's violin recitals in the last seasons of his long career. His touch and his tone were gone, and he made more than his share of errors, but he had been a great artist, and you tried to be kind in print, referring to "his sunset years," rather than his diminished talent.

i It's difficult to review Rudy Vallee, at 71, but for lightly different reasons. The old "Hi Ho, Everybody" crooner's voice, never of the robust variety, now is scarcely a shadow of its former self, and Rudy doesn't pretend to be a singer anymore. He does his "signature" numbers "The Whiffenpoof Song" and "Oh, Give Me Something to Remember You By," and the nostalgia harvest is just fine. Some of his comedy material, in which he refers to himself as "the picture of Dorian Vallee," recalls the Stanley Steamer and the Stutz Bearcat, and muses about what becomes of men's hair, is pretty amusing, too. But at length he ventures into an interminable series of quick, two-line jokes and of tasteless dirty limericks that aren't funny.

STELLA STEVENS RIP TORN "Daring, original and fascinating and there's just a faded veteran who shouldn't be doing this unless he needs the money and, from all the stories we've" heard, that isn't Rudy's predicament. He seems to be enjoying Night Life life, and apparently isn't the least embarrassed by the weakness of his act, in the Blue Max at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. In fact, he's very generous with himself, staying on a bit lengthily.

The Sunset is a musical duo scarcely launched on a career. Larry and Greg Wright, a pair of singing brothers, were part of a quartet until last October, now work with four instrumentalists for accompaniment. The Wrights, are garbed in what look like decollete white sailor suits. "Harry Belafonte's navy," quoth a lady at our table. They're a strikingly handsome pair with energy as well as musi-cality, and a lot of variety.

They open with a spirited "Take Me Back to West Virginia" and it's nice to hear someone sing sentimentally about that neglected little state. "When you make a sex film," he said, "you must consider the audience that will be going to see it, and you must consider their fantasies. One of the most common tmmmmmmmmmmmm fantasies a man has is abusing women, wreaking his re-TRIBUNE MINIREVIEW venge, or doing with them Cruel wnat he will. Everybody knows that to be true." Rated r. ually inadequate man who Kt vm sepw Burton seven beautiful women and one old hag.

tm The time of the movie is between the world wars, and the place is Germany. Rich ard Burton is Baron Kurt Von Sepper, a World War I hero who lives in a big house, has lots of money, loves to kill animals for sport, and has a bluish goatee. The last posession is the one that gives him his nickname. That's because what kind of a nickname is "Big House" or "Lots of Money" or After a gratuitous scene in which a Jewish ghetto is stormed by troopers with familar armbands, Bluebeard gets down to business, which is explaining to his latest lovely, an American dance hall singer played by Joey Heatherton, why he killed all of his previous wives. "They were monsters," he explains.

"They only looked human when they were dead." What the screenwriter meant for Burton to say was, "They only acted human when they were dead," but no matter, because "Bluebeard" is more trashy than merely badly written. The theme that ties the episodes of death together is cruelty. The women that Bluebeard marries are idiots. One Eings all the time, another is lazy, another talks of only her previous lovers, another frankly, I don't remember. Fed up with their inadequacies, Bluebeard kills them.

There are scenes of whipping, slapping, punching, decapitating, and spearing. As the porno film maker said, these scenes and the whole mentality behind "Bluebeard" are designed to pander to people who enjoy seeing women abused. FILM NOTES: Anthony J.
