m. of J. Section 3 CHICAGO TR SUNE, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1970 DOS PASSOS, TRILOGY AUTHOR, DIES Lost Leftist Illusions in Spanish Civil War BALTIMORE, Sept. 28 John Dos Passos, 74, author of the trilogy S. and more than 30 other books, died today at his apartment.

He had been troubled by a heart condition for several years, according to a friend, and had been released Saturday from Good Samaritan Hospital. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had divided their time for several years between the Baltimore apartment and a home in Westmoreland, Va. S. was written in a highly original style and formed a literary documentary of the early decades of this century. In the work, Dos Passos took the side of labor struggles and liberal goals.

Supporter of Goldwater As he grew older, his views changed. "Midcentury," a novel published in 1961, portrayed labor leaders and liberals in a less favorable light. By 1964, John Dos Passos Dos Passos was endorsing Barry, for Goldwater's President. Republican candidacy Born in Chicago, Dos Passos was graduated from Harvard College in 1916 and in 1919 published his first book, "One Man's Initiation," reprinted in 1946 under the title "First Encounter." He first gained wide attention in 1921 with his antiwar novel, "Three Soldiers." During the 1920s Dos Passos produced other, Night," "Manhattan Transfer," and "Orient Express," as well as volumes of essays and verse and two plays, "Airways Inc." "The Garbage Man." In the early '30s, he turned out three novels "'The 42d allel," "Nineteen Nineteen," and "The Big Money," which were to be combined into the monumental trilogy, "U.S. his most famous work.

Other works included "Adventures of a Young Man," "Number One," "State of the Nation," "The Grand Design," "Chosen Country," and "Most Likely to Succeed." Disillusioned by Reds His most recently published work was "The Portugal Story" in 1969. Dos Passos' move toward conservatism began more than -20 years ago. In 1948, he told a press conference in Uruguay, "My past socailist enthusiasm has cooled." He said he once thought Russian communism was the hope of the future, but was disillusioned by "Communist domination and infiltration" during the Spanish civil war. In 1951 he said: "A young man today doesn't have the opportunities that a young man had in my Now a man has to get into some kind of organization governmental, labor, Dos Passos said he was still in favor of human liberties, but "the people who used to be in favor of them with me, two or three decades ago, now are in favor of restrictions on them." OBITUARIES Mrs. Ida Freedman Mrs. Ida Freedman, 73, of 7061 N. Kedzie died yesterday in Weiss Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Samuel L.

Freedman, a Cook County assistant state's attorney from 1936 to 1949. Mrs. Freedman was past president of the Albany Park Chapter of the American Jewish Congress. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Bette Warren; two sons, Albert M.

and Gilbert; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bunes and Mrs. Tillie Temkin; two brothers, Henry and Philip Schelly; eight grandchildren; and one great Services will be held at 10 a. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 6130 N.

California Av. John M. Culinan Mass for John M. Cullnan, 74, a retired Chicago police captain, will be said 11 a. tomorrow in St.

Irenaeus Catholic Church, 175 Indianwood Park Forest. Capt. Culinan died Sunday in his home at 36 McCarthy Forest. He retired in 1958 after serving with the police department for 35 years. At the time of his retirement, he worked in the human relations section.

He is survived by his, widow, Laura; a son, John a Chicago police sergeant; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Parker and Kathleen; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harold McIntyre Services for Mrs. Esther McIntyre, 68, of San Bernadino, formerly of Chicago, will be held at 10 a.

m. Thursday in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 6001 W. 111th Worth. Mrs. McIntyre died Thursday in her home.

She was secretary at the Chicago Car Interchange Bureau for 38 years before retiring in 1962. Her husband, Harold, is a retired foreman for the General American Transportation Co. Mrs. Mcintyre is also survived by three brothers. Cyril J.

McNamee Mass for Cyril J. McNamee, 52, of 1216 N. Parkside on disability leave since January after six years as a machinist for THE TRIBUNE, will be held at 10 a. m. tomorrow in St.

Angela Catholic Church, 5758 Potomac Av. Mr. McNamee, former commander of the Commodore Barry Post, American Legion, died Saturday in Anne's Hospital. Surviving are his widow, Catherine; three daughters, Mrs. Kathleen Greaney, Mrs.

Eileen Nawara, and Noreen; his mother, Martha; two grandchildren; a sister; and a brother. Mrs. Dora Marcus Services for Mrs. Dora Marcus, 81, of 1540 W. North Shore will be held at 2 p.

m. today in the chapel at 1300 W. Devon Av. Mrs. Marcus, who died Sunday, was the widow of Mark, a manufacturer of men's clothing, who died in 1951.

She ber was an and chairman board, the honorary memwomen's division of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frances Rudnick and Mrs. Bernice Chalem; a son, Phillip; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. David M.

Saltiel David M. Saltiel, 76, of 3033 N. Sheridan a certified public accountant with offices at 323 S. Franklin died yesterday in St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was in the accounting business for more than 50 years. Services will be held at 10 a. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 5206 N. Broadway.

Survivors are his widow, Helen; a daughter, Mrs. -Miriam Posner; a son, Robert; two brothers; and four grandchildren. Harry Lyons Services for Harry Lyons, 69, a retired Chicago police sergeant, will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday in the United Methodist Church, Prairie Du Chien, Wis.

Sgt. Lyons, who died Sunday, retired in 1961 after serving with the police department for 33 years. He is survived by his widow, Marion; a sister, Mrs. Lela' Clement; and a brother, Donald, who is chief of police in Prairie Du Chien. POLICE GROUP'S LAWYER SEIZED IN WAUKEGAN Arthur Loevy, attorney for the Cook County Police Association, was arrested last night for breaking a glass door in Waukegan City Hall when he was refused admittance to a Waukegan City Council meeting.

Police said Loevy was refused admittance because all available seats were taken. Loevy began rapping on the glass entrance door to the building, and it broke, police said. Loevy was locked up for hours, and city officials refused his offer to pay for the door. He was charged with disorderly and a spokesman for the County state's attorney's office said he may be charged, today with criminal damage to property. The City Council held a regular business meeting, attended by many of the striking policemen and their wives.

FINDS HENDRIX TOOK 9 TIMES NORMAL PILLS BY JOSEPH CERUTTI Tribune Press LONDON, Sept. 28 -Guitarist Jimi Hendrix, 27, died swallowing nine times the normal dose of barbiturate tablets, Westminster Coroner's Court was told Prof. Donald, Teare said the pop star suffocation due to barbiturate intoxication. Teare said there was no evidence that Hendrix was a drug addict. The professor is a pathologist who carried out the post mortem examination.

The Westminster coroner, Dr. Gavin Thurston, recorded an open verdict at the inquest. He said there were no signs Hendrix intended suicide. "The question why he took so many sleeping tablets cannot be safely answered," the coroner said. Girl Friend Testifies Hendrix's girl friend, Monika Danneman, 23, a former iceskating champion from Dusseldorf, Germany, wept as she spoke of his last hours at her London apartment 10 days ago.

She wore a black maxi dress. Miss Danneman, a slender blonde, said she had known Hendrix since January last year. They went out for the day on Sept. 17, and returned at 8:30 p. m.

"I cooked a meal and we drank a bottle of white wine," she said. "'He told me he had to go to some people's apartment. I dropped him off there and picked him up just after 3 a.m. Smoked Marijuana "He said he took some canabis at that apartment. When we got home I made him a fish sandwich and I took a sleeping tablet." Miss Danneman said she awoke about 10:30 a.m., Sept.

18. Hendrix was sleeping. He appeared normal so she left the apartment to buy cigarets. When she returned he still asleep but had vomited. He was breathing but she could not wake him.

She found a package of her sleeping tablets with nine missing and assumed Hendrix took them shile she slept. After telephoning a friend for advice, she called an ambulance. Miss Danneman said Hendrix told her he had experimented with hard drugs. He sometimes took sleeping pills, she said. Hendrix's tour manager, Jeremy Stickells, said the pop star occasionally used amphetamines.

He said Hendrix had been healthy for the last two years apart from one occasion in Denmark when he was excessively tired. Stickells said he never heard Hendrix wish he were dead. DEATH OF G.O.P. CANDIDATE IS RULED SUICIDE ST. LOUIS, Sept.

28 (UPD John Peters, 49, Republican candidate for Missouri's 2 2d District congressional seat, shot himself to death, the St. Louis County medical examiner ruled today. Peters' body was found last night in the basement of his campaign headquarters. He had been shot in the left side of the chest. A 16-gauge shotgun was found beside the body.

Peters was pronounced dead at St. Louis County Hospital. "We have officially ruled it a suicide," said Dr. George E. Gantner, chief medical examiner, after the examination was completed.

SISTER, ROSE OSSEY Two Chicago GIs Killed" in Viet Nam Pfc. Edward J. Lakwa, 21, of 1512 Superior and Pfc. William J. Frossard, 20, of 3854 W.

61st were killed last Thursday while on patrol in South th Viet Nam, the Defense Department announced yesterday. Lakwa, a naturalized citizen born in East Germany, was killed by a land mine which Edward Lakwa exploded under the military vehicle he was driving. He had been in Viet Nam for seven months. Names of Survivors Survivors are his mother, Jean; his father, John, and a sister, Christine, 10. Frossard was a machine gunner when he was killed while on patrol.

He enlisted in the Army while attending Bogan City College at nights and working William Frossard as an inspector for Sears Roebuck Co. He was graduated from St. Rita High school in June, 1968. Fund for Hospital Because of Frossard's interest in children suffering muscular dystrophy, the family plans to establish a fund in his name to aid children at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 2211 N.
