The storm warnings had been up all week.

But the Green Wave had only locked the cellars against the fury of Joe Theismann, whose howling passes sometimes can make a gale pause and listen. They had not anticipated the tail of the hurricane -Notre Dame's relentless ability to spread devastation on the ground. Tonight the Irish ran for 384 yards, against a passing gain of 108. The other was by Ed Ziegler, who plunged two yards to send the Irish in front 6 to 0, with 10 seconds left in the first period. Automatic Scott Hempel followed with the extra point kick, his 27th consecutive success to set a Notre Dame record. Going into tonight's game, Hempel was tied with Buck Shaw, who had 26 in a row way back in 1926. Hempel ran his streak to 30 before Tulane had the satisfaction of seeing him miss after Allan had bulled less than a yard for the final touchdown on the opening play of the final period. But, before that, Hempel rocked the Green Wave with a 33-yard field goal to close out the first half with Notre Dame in front, 24 to 0.

Tulane had the ball for only six plays in the third period, and on No. 6, Jim Batey fumbled. John Gasser recovered for the Irish on Notre Dame's 41 and the Irish whirled off to Allan's last touchdown. Bob Olson's recovery of the Tulane 28, led to Huff's 4-yard touchdown plunge that sent the Irish in front, 14 to 0. Huff reeled off gains of 16 and 15 yards before his one-yard scoring smash in the 69-yard Irish drive that mounted the score to 21 to 0 with less than a minute until half time.
