That energy, of course, is a direct function of Philip Roth's writing. Ernest Lehman, who served as script writer and director, has replaced Alex's energy with surprisingly tame and traditional Hollywood melodrama visuals, and when these visuals are matched with a soundtrack full of dirty language, the effect is depressing. The novel took the form of a 200-page stream-of-con sciousness confession by Alex to his silent psychiatrist, whereas the film looks like a series of conventional soap opera episodes. There's "Alex at with his mother Lee Grant neither as oppressive as Alex thinks of her In the book, nor as suffocatingly tender as she may have been by more objective standards. This Sophie Portnoy is simply a shrew.

There's "Alex in the Bathroom" which, while hardly explicit, manages to achieve a remarkable tastelessness. There's "Alex Comes of Age," a low of virginity sequence that Is painfully unorlgiqal and made tolerable only by a nice performance by Lewis Stadlen as one of Alex's greaseball friends. The film pays most of it's attention to Alex's relationship with The Monkey, the nickname of the gentile girl to whom Alex can physically relate. With the schmaltzy Michel Le-grand score soaring In the background, Richard Benjamin as Alex and Karen Black as The Monkey act very much like "Ryan O'Neal and All MacGraw in "Love Story." It is a Jhearts-and-flowers romance that achieves neither humor, 1 tastelessness, nor tenderness. There is a lot of dirty talk on sound track, but nothing explicit on the screen.

That ought to frustrate everybody. GeneSiskel "Told with rare lensnonsneu.
