9-4 BY RICHARD DOZER George Altman, a star these last three years in the Japanese major leagues and a disciple of the conditioning programs followed by baseball players in that country has given Ernie Banks a new slant on calisthenics. Banks, who is 10 days away from his 40th birthday, began working out with Altman yesterday in Hyde Park YMCA, and promptly announced that his 1971 goal along with the usual Cub pennant wish is "to win the comeback of the year award." If he succeeds, Cub fans will be right in tossing some bouquets in the direction of Altman, Ernie's former teammate who led the Cubs in batting in 1962 but soon found himself on the major league scrap heap after brief flings with the Cardinals and Mets, and finally the Cubs again in 1967. Altman traces his demise to inactivity, and he remembers muscle pulls which caused some of it during a brief but excellent major leape career. In three years in Japan, however, the stringent conditioning has restored him to the top of his game at age 37. Ernid hopes it rubs off on him.

He hit .252 and played less than half of the Cub schedule last year due to an arthritic DAILY SAT. knee. "We'll be working out three times a week up until we go to Arizona," Ernie told The Tribune yesterday. What? Altman to Arizona, too? Yes, the Lotte Orions, which is Altman's team in Japan's Pacific League, opens training in Casa Grande, in February as part of sort of exchange program in. which another Japanese team, the Tokyo Giants, will be drilling in Florida.

A number of American teams have toured Japan in recent years, including the 1970 Giants last March. The exercises prescribed by Altman, whom Ernie henceforth will call "Honorable George," emphasize conditioning the legs and back, related Banks, who is determined to undertake the '71 season on two good knees. "We do knee bends, back bends, and a lot of stretching," he said. "We plan to be running a mile by next week, and we'll shoot a few baskets that's hardly Oriental, boys and swim a little." Altman pointed out that the difference between Japanese players and Americans is the extreme dedication of the athletes in the Land of the Rising Sun. "Rain, sleet, or snow, they work out," George told Ernie, who couldn't wait to drop his newest pun by way of a reply: "I've got a yen to do the same thing." THURS.
