Section A PAGE 4 THE SUN, BALTIMORE, SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 24, 1967 Eastern Shore Football BAYLOR BOWS ARMYDOWKS i'BAMA, F.S.U. IN 37-37 TIE Football Scores All Middletoivn Football Mad Winning String Grows To 47 As Prep Straight and they put out that little extra." QfJ By JAMES H. JACKSON Middlelown, has a population of only 2,800 but Middle town High regularly draws in excess of 5,000 fans to its home football games. One of the main reasons is that the town of Middletown is football mad over its heroes, the Cavaliers, who are riding a 17-game winning streak. Middletown, which hasn't lost a football game in six years, has only 500 students in its high school and just 240 boys, but from this small number head coach Bill Billings has molded five straight unbeaten teams.

Middletown has never lost a football game since he has been head coach. Friday night Middletown made Smyrna its forty-seventh straight victim, 53 to 0. Billings From Catawba Billings, a Catawba College grad, refuses to compare his current team with last year's powerhouse which went 10-0 and was ranked nineteenth in the nation. Last season's team was led by quarterback Buddy Merkle who was the leading scorer Delaware prep ranks with 144 points. "We have some good football players, but on the whole you'd have to say we're pretty green," Billings says.

"It's pretty early in the season to compare this team with some of my others, but they could come around." Middletown wasn't always a a o-o tie to Forest Park last Friday. Ken Rash scored two touch downs, passed for a third and Lorenzo Clark and Roy Rigby each tallied a pair of touch downs as Caesar Rodney High whipped Lewes, 58 to 0. Terry Jelliffe, failed on six extra point attempts but booted a 28-yard held goal for the winners. In other games, Bridgeville crushed 52 to 0, as halfback Francis Johnson scor ed four touchdowns; Millsboro whipped Rehoboth, 38-0, on three touchdowns by Jim Hall, and Georgetown beat Col. Richard son, 33-13.

On that occasion the Cava liers knocked off Salesianum of Wilmington, always one of the area's powerhouses. This victory made the Cavaliers and now they are taken seriously by just about everyone who follows prep football.

"We have two excellent quar terbacks in Greg Simendiger and Scott Reim," says Billings. "Simendiger is the passer and Rheim the runner." Simendiger, 6-2, 180, is also an excellent pitcher who has the major league scouts following him. Greg hurled for the Dela ware team this summer that finished third in the National American Legion tournament. Rheim, 5-10, ISO, is the runner and Billings alternates the two at the signal calling post. Cale Scores 3 Times "We also have a couple of top linemen in guard Alley Stokes, 5-10, 165, and tackle Danny May-brey, 5-11, 170," Billings con tinues.

"They go both ways for us and are tough on both offense and defense." "Another fine player is- John Branner, a 5-9, 150 pound scat- back who is hard to stop. Give him one block in the open field and he is gone, he said. Branner and Andy Cale, an other halfback, tallied three touchdowns each in Middle- town's rout of Smyrna. Branner tallied on a run of 1 yard and a 35-yard pass from Rheim and 57-yard pass from Simendiger. Cale scored on runs of 3, 12 and 5 yards.

In other action Friday, half back John Boehner scored on runs of 21, 10 and 3 yards and booted two extra points to lead Dover High to a 20-to-0 win over North Caroline; Ken Madden, Ralph Palmer and Ken Roberts scored touchdowns as Seaford topped Easton, 18 to Tom Sutton scored twice and Bill Seabrease added a touchdown and passed for another as Cam bridge riped Milford, 35 to Andy Mitchell booted a 30-yard field goal and two extra points and Cam Jackson and Ron Hodges registered touchdowns as James M. Bennett High topped Havre de Grace, 17 to 6. Laurel and Wicomico battled to scoreless tie. It was the second week in a row that Wi comico had played a 0-0 dead lock. That put Virginia tempo rarily in the lead, 7-6. Quayle's score came on i touchdown march in which six plays covered 64 yards with 34 of these accounted for by Gene Arnette's pass to Quayle. Army Intercepts Army scored first on a 53- yard march in nine plays is the opening period with Carl Woes sner carrying over from the six on a pitchout from LeDoux. Virginia began the game slow ly with a tight defense but was unable to make a single first down in the first period. Then came the brilliant touchdown march in which Arnette contrib uted runs of 11 and 12 yards in addition to his touchdown pass to Quayle.

Virginia came back strong after the score, marching from its own 16 to the Army 26 where the cadets finally held for downs.
