CHICAGO TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1970 Section 2 19 MOTION PICTUItES DOWNTOWN MOTION PICTURES DOWNTOWN MOTION PICTURES DOWNTOWN MOTION PICTURES DOWNTOWN movie nsvisw 'Move TODAY -9 a.m. Barnabas Collins, Vatlire, takes a bride premiere of Ingmar Bergman's "The Ritual" tomorrow. The film was entered in last year's New York festival but was delayed in commercial release because of the release of Bergman's "The Passion of Anna." The story line follows the obscenity trial of a group of itinerant actors played by Bergman's usual cast. The film will be shown tomorrow at 7, 8:30 and 10 p.m. in Mandel hall, 5701 University Av.

Tickets are $1.50. i CAUGHT with a box-office dud "The People Next Door" the State Lake Theater has called on an old friend, Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," to make money. The theater offers stereo sound left over from "Woodstock" and a 70 mm. print which gives more depth to the photography and sound track. It doesn't, however, explain the meaning of the monolith.

I'VE HAD ENOUGH of Elliott Gould. I don't want to see him again play himself or Time magazine's conception of ui himself. I do not empathize TRIBUNE MINI REVIEW with him in any way. But I am in the minority. There Empty are thousands of women who "MOVE" iove his locks, mustache, life EMK style, squint, grin and hairy jmi Liewr, Twentieth century-Fo back.

He's Contemporary Man stymied by success, hassled by police and consumed by day dreams.

Joel Lieber's script is insufficient for even a 90-minute movie. Gould is a would-be playwright in New York City who is forced to write pornographic novels and walk dogs to support Paula Prentiss his wife and Murphy his St. Bernard. But instead of focusing on this conflict which might have made the movie, Lieber adds a further problem. The family is moving from their west side brownstone to a large apartment house two blocks away.

Will they move? Will they resist change? What is the meaning of the fact that the only movement in Gould's life is from apartment to apartment? Many of the vignettes spring from the active mind of the character. They are fantasies. He moves in fantasies; not in life. But it is not always possible to tell which events are real and which are fantasy. The cause for this is not a clever script, but that one doesn't care to tell the difference.

There's no reward. In other words, the central script idea has no meaning other than as a device. Paula Prentiss manages to overcome nasty make-up to become a credible wife. The best performance is that of Genevieve Waite who played "Joanna" as a fey nymphet who accosts Gould in, I think, one of his fantasies.
