"I can't speak for all of. them," said Whitey, "but, I know I could never put it completely out of my mind. Oh, I don't mean I'd be out there thinking about it when I was concentrating on a tough hitter in a ball game, but every now and then you'd catch yourself testing to see if everything still felt okay. "The whole livelihood in baseball hangs there with that arm. How many pitchers become managers, or even coaches, other than pitching coaches?" Ford was right.

There isn't a former pitcher managing In the major leagues today, and they certainly aren't in demand for coaching jobs, except those handling other pitchers. No, for the most part, they've got one way to make their living out of the game, and that's throwing the baseball. Every now and then, you see pitchers who seem to invite arm trouble, because they don't maintain proper conditioning. Not Palmer. He is always working.

He ran so much in spring training, people were asking him if he were getting ready to run in the Olympics, or pitch some baseball. "I really want to be ready for this season," he said at the time. "I've just barely been getting over the 20 mark each year. This time, I'd really like to have that good year. I feel good and I want to keep it that way." The figure Palmer mentioned to me several times In spring training was 27.

I didn't write about it at the time, because it was more in the nature of hoping than it was a prediction. But, the way he looked then, nothing he did would have surprised me. Now, he is sweating out a stay on the disabled list, and if you don't think he is worried about the future, then you've never met a pitcher with a sore arm. If the whole thing is unpleasant to Palmer, it is no less so for the Orioles. They've had enough problems trying to establish some consistency, let alone tackling the job with a Cy Young winner on the disabled list.

Yet, a break like this doesn't have to be fatal. The Red Sox traded for Rick Wise over the winter, and figured on him as one of their better starters. He had to go on the disabled list, and while he was there the Sox actually lengthened their lead. Now, Wise is back, and the future has to look good for both him and the club. Boston had the depth to cover up for him.

On paper the Orioles also have the necessary depth to survive this type of break, if they can transfer their potential into performance. Doyle Alexander, Don Hood, Jesse Jefferson, Wayne Garland all of them have enough equipment to start and win in Palmer's spot in the rotation. Good ball clubs usually overcome a few bad breaks during the course of a season. Maybe we'll find out a little more about the character of the 1974 Orioles while Palmer is on the disabled list. Dr.

Brown to remain with Texas indefinitely "Brooks fell on my knee as he fell across the bag for the tag," said the 38-year-old Kaline. "I was worried when it first happened but I'll be all right." Orienteering a Scandinavian sport similar to car rallying but done on foot in the woods, comes to Baltimore. The object of this new outdoor sport is for novices and family groups to search for six checkpoints along a 3Vi mile course, while experienced woodsmen or athletes competing on an individual basis will be required to find eight or nine checkpoints in about five miles of forest trails. Participants must find a series of checkpoints by following directions and clues given at the start.

The checkpoints are Greek letters attached to tee-shirts, hung from trees, hidden behind rocks or left in concealed areas off the trail, never in an obvious location. Contestants will be supplied with a topographical map of the course and must supply their own compasses. To minimize the emphasis on competition and increase the interest of visiting local parks: fun of participating in a physical activity and meeting others, only two awards will be given. The winner of the advanced group will receive a com-pass, donated by The Sunpapers. while the family winner will receive The Bal-timore Trail book, a publication of the Greater Baltimore Sierra Club.
