The grand jury acted one day after the breakup in Chicago of a large scale parlay card racket, which handled as much as $500,000 a week in bets. Police seized 105,000 of the cards and arrested five persons.

BY JOHN O'BRIEN Printed in Indiana The federal indictment charged that as many as 10,000 of the cards were prepared each week in Indiana last fall. They were then made available to distributors in Illinois who, turn, peddled them back in Indiana, mostly among factory workers in the industrial region of Whiting, Hammond and East Chicago, according to Sheldon Davidson, head of the Justice Department's antiracketeering strike force in Chicago. Davidson and an assistant strike force prosecutor, Lee Hawke, said the indictment was followup to the arrest last Nov. 21 of five men on interstate gambling and conspiracy charges by the FBI. Named by the grand jury as defendants in the five-count indictment were William A.

Athens 33, of rural route 2, Valparaiso, and Raymond W. Rodgers, 61, of 427 Hirsch Calumet City. Travels to Collect Told It accused Athens of making the cards and said he and Rodgers traveled between Valparaiso, Calumet City and Whiting, to distribute them and collect gambling proceeds on at least two dates, Sept. 24 and Oct. 24 last year.

Named as unindicted coconspirators in the case were two Gary men, Arthur Lee Johnson, 49, and James Miller, 45, and a Calumet City neighbor of Rodgers, Michael Budnyk, 55.
