Spirit Of Christmas Present In Home Of Sleeping Bernadine DAVENPORT Pollock sleeps--but nowhere in land is the "spirit of Christinas" so awake as at the home of her parents in Davenport. There is "Christmas" in every letter received by the parents of the 13-year-old girl who has been in a coma for 14 months. The let- lers, a containing small cash ijifts, have been coming in from every state in the union. The total in money now is slightly more than $200. There is "Christmas" in 1he calm understanding of the post office which has unerringly delivered messages addressed simply: To the parents of Bernadine, Davenport." Or, "To the Davenport.

'Coma Most of all there's "Christmas" in a i of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Pollock who have never asked for public aid for their a but who smiled ihrouRli (oars at the outpouring of good will and saying, "God Mess the folks, everyone of them." Scientist Describes Colossus Of Rhodes as 'Hollow Sham' LONDON fP--The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, was described by a British scientist Thursday night as a hollow sham. Herbert Maryon, 79-year-old sculp- tor-archaeologtst, told a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries the giant jstatue was: 1. Too small stand astride the harbor of Rhodes.

2. Made of thin bronze sheets instead of solid bronze. The statute, of the Sun Helios, was work of a sculptor named Chares, who spent 12 years on his masterpiece. It was erected in 280 B. C.

An earthquake tumbled it 53 years later. The story handed down through the years is that the statue stood with a beacon in its hands and one foot on each side of the harbor entrance, with enough clearance for ships to pass underneath. Maryon said he has determined from a study of classical inscriptions thnt the statue was in fact 120 feet high and the harbor 600 feet wide, which would make the famous straddle an anatomical impossibility. Furthermore, he said, his research indicated the heroic figure was not cast in one piece as hitherto supposed, but was a of brone sheets beaten inlo shape and riveted together. Maryon estimated (he thickness of the shoots as a to a of a i i penny--about a 35th of an inch.
