Sun, Moon Are Feast Factors Passover, Easter At Same Time Unusual By LARRY SIMS (Herald Tribune News Service) NEW YORK The occurrence of both the Jewish feast of Pass- overland the Christian feast of Easter on the same date, as will happen Sunday, is a rare mathematical phenomenon governed partly by the sun and moon, according to no regular pattern. It happened in 1923 and 1927, but won't happen again until 1981.

Astronomers themselves did not attempt to compute when it would recur, but took the word of Rabbi Newman, who has written several theses on the subject. The complex calculations that determine the dates of these two principal religious feast are made according to two entirely different systems--the Hebrew calendar, which is based on the moon's position in relation to the earth and sun, and the Gregorian calendar, based on the earth's position relative to the sun. Tells Timing Even this year the two holidays do not coincide precisely, since the first day of the eighth-day Passover season begins at sunset on Saturday and ends at Sunset Roderigo de Osono "Resurrection" (Johnson Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art). Nisan is the first month of the year in the Jewish. civil calendar, except in Jewish leap years, when an extra month, called Veadar, is added, and Nisan becomes the eighth month.

Since Hebrew months always begin at the new moon, the 15th of the month falls approximately when the moon is full. Easter is always observed on the Sunday following the first full moon after March 21. March 21 is approximately the beginning of spring, or vernal equinox, when the sun crosses the earth's equator. Joseph Chamberlain, chief astronomer at Hayden Planetarium, noted that these'calculations are based on the Paschal moon (in the case of Easter) and Passover moon, which arc determined by complex mathematical computations. They do not necessarily coincide with the actual position of the moon in the sky.

About one year out of every four, the loth of Nisan happens to coincide with the first full moon after March 21st and in these years Easter falls on, the Sunday following Passover, One Definite Rule About the only definite rule is that Passover can never begin on Easter Sunday that is, at sunset on Easter. When the full moon and the 15th of Nisan both occur on Saturday night, as is the case this year, Passover begins at sunset on Saturday. When these two events occur on Sunday night, Passover begins at sunset the same Sunday, but Easter is observed the following Sunday. Rabbi Newman explained that a computed, fictitious moon is used in these calculations because the actual new moon cannot be observed with the naked eye. In ancient days, rabbis watched nightly for the first slim moon crescent to appear after the new moon, then sent word for the shofar horn to be blown and fires to be lighted so that people many miles dislant would know a new month had begun.

The Council of Nicea, in 325 set Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon to mark the Christian belief that Jesus Christ's resurrection occurred on a Sunday, and in hopes of providing pilgrims with a fuV moon for their journeys to Easter services. The full moon in this case was calculated from the actual equinox, but Pope Gregory in reforming the Christian calendar in 1582, calculated it from March 21. Dr. Vernon C. Grounds Dr.
