His at-bats early in the Red Wings season served as his spring training. "Hitting is a feeling," Biaginl said. "Now he has a good feeling going.

Hopefully, he'll settle into a groove and help his confidence." McKnight is one of four switch hitters Biaginl has available. He has usually batted In the middle or lower third of the order, but recently moved up as high as fifth. "With him hitting the ball now. It doesn't matter where I put him," Biaginl said. McKnight is also versatile as a fielder.

Last season with the Tidewater Tides, the New York Mets' Class AAA club, he played every position but pitcher. He played only four games In left field, but he has started 16 games there this season. He has played one game at second base and three at first. He has been the designated hitter once, which Is plenty for him. "You have a different approach when playing in different positions," McKnight said.

"As far as carrying it into hitting, I don't find any correlation. When I play, I feel more a part of the game. When I DH, all I'm doing Is batting. You're not In the flow of the game." Third baseman Leo Gomez was named the IL Batter of the Week for the period ending Sunday. Gomez hit four home runs and had two multiple-hit games.

He hit his first grand slam of the season Friday to give the Red Wings an 1 1-8 lead in a game they lost. 12-11, and was rewarded with what he said was the first curtain call of his five-year Tuesday's Red Wings box score ROCHESTER AB HBI TOLEDO Ab" Bellss Dulin 2b Segui lb Gomez 3b McKnight II Hoiles dh Chance rf Tackett Turner cf Wlewndr ss 5 0 10 4 0 0 0 3 0 10 4 0 0 0 3 110 4 2 2 0 4 0 11 3 0 2 1 3 0 11 0 0 0 0 Cuylercf Freeman dh Lusader rf Undeman lb Lovullo 2b Ware If Livingstone 3b Michel Ibff Decillis ss Fryman ss Clark 4 110 3 0 2 1 10 0 0 3 0 0 0 4 0 10 4 0 0 0 2 2 11 3 112 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 Totals 33 3 9 3 Totals 30 4 4 Rochester Toledo 020 001 000 110 200 OX 4 LOB Rochester 8, Toledo 4. N.Y. Baseball players can be prisoners of their sta- I tistlcs. 1 "If pave Winfield or Don Mat- tingly don't hit 25 homers. It's a bad year." Rochester Red Wings outfield-; er Jeff McKnight said. Even if McKnight doesn't repeat last year's career-high nine home hins or second-best 48 RBI, he be- jieves he can have a successful sea- II on.

"I don't set goals this year by ivjiat I had last year," said McKnight, I batted .249 In 1989 for Tidewa- ier. "You have to do things now. You fcan't rely on what you did in the Jjast. My goals are more about what I feel I'm doing than numbers. I think clumbers will come naturally if you Jojay the game hard, play like it's fupposed to be played." -Talk like that may have eased through the first 12 games of the International League during which the switch hitter endured an 0-for-24 streak and -batted .133.

FT After going 4-for-30, McKnight ridden a 16-for-43 streak that i brought his average to .274 before I last night's game. He has collected i multiple hits in five of his past 12 His philosophy Is unchanged. McKnight still looks to give himself Lup to advance a runner and do TTwhatever fits into manager Greg HBiaginl's team concept on offense. ZZ VTm not concerned about home 3lins and average," McKnight, 27, "eaid. "I like to simplify it as much as possible.

Prepare yourself. Let your fthllitv work itself out." McKnight's best preparation may I have been his first 30 at-bats, de- spite their result.
