Sulie never made any bones about confessing 18 years ago that he shot and stabbed to death another man in a fight over a girl. He even showed the police where to find the body in a water-filled clay pit.

But the killing occurred on a county line, and for 18 years Lake and Porter counties in Indiana have kicked the case back and forth, neither county willing to prosecute. Yesterday, deputy sheriffs of the two counties walked their separate ways, leaving Sulie, now 33, standing alone and free on the steps of the Porter county jail in Valparaiso. Finds It "Amusing" As he shuffled off into a waiting car to be driven to his home in Hobart, Sulie said, "I'm finding it all pretty amusing." Sulie was charged in both counties with murdering Edward Owens, 20, of Hobart, in 1950. A week later, the Lake county surveyor declared that the murder scene was 75 feet east of the Lake county line, and the prosecutor washed his hands of the case and shipped the records to Porter county. Case was Suspended The case was suspended when Sulie was transferred to Beatty State hospital at Westville, Ind.

Authorities said he was insane and held him there for 18 years until he was released last spring. At this point the border dispute was taken up where it left off, with judges in both counties refusing to hear the case. And that's where it stood yesterday when deputies showed each other their conflicting court orders, shrugged, and walked away. He said the line's Bluebird express train from St. Louis to bomb?
