Shaw plays him as a kind of sober John Car-radine, dramatically pausing for eye-darting, speaking with what sounds like a Scotch accent Custer was born in Ohio, and treating every line as if it were part of Washington's farewell Others In the cast include Mary lire the real-life Mrs. Shaw as Custer's faithful sidekick-wife; Jeffrey Hunter as an idealistic lieutenant who champions the Cheyenne cause; Ty Hardin as big-boozing Major Marcus Reno who refuses to come to Custer's aid recent books have tried to exonerate him; Kieron Moore, as a Cheyenne chief who looks more like a Catskill social director; and an incredibly old Lawrence "Dillinger" Tierney as quotable Gen. Sheridan, who also declares that "the only good Indian is a dead In-Indian." Knock 'em in the aisles, Phil, BY CLIFFORD TERRY IF HE WERE alive today, George Armstrong Custer undoubtedly would be 1 booted out of West Point as an innocent by-stander in a cribbing scandal, 2 drafted as a Vice Presidential candidate on a ticket headed by Harold Stassen, and 3 signed by the New York Mets to play outfield as a sort of militaristic Marv Throne-berry. In spite of building up an impressive record for perhaps 95 per cent of his career, Custer of course has gone down as one of this country's all-time-great losers because of his impetuosity one June day in Montana.

In films, he has been played by platoons of actors, including Dust in Farnum in "Flaming Frontier" 1926, Ronald Reagan in "Santa Fe Trail" 1940, Errol Flynn in "They Died with Their Boots On" 1941, and Philip Carey in "The Great Sioux Massa- Ty Hardin (left) as Maj. Twenty minutes have been trimmed from the original 140, but it still seems longer than the cumulative running time of the French and Indian wars.

Prior to its first-run shuffle in Chicago's neighborhoods, "Custer of the West" was tried out as reserved-seat biggie in various cities, but bombed out more than the general's final outing. No wonder. Despite the Technicolor and Super Technirama, the "spectacular" proves to be anything but.

The story picks up in 1861, when the boy wonder Union officer personally leads 60 cavalry charges in routing the Rebs. Once the war is over, he informs Gen. Philip Sheridan, "I want action," and his commander suggests zapping the Indians out West, actually saying, "You know, Custer you could become a living legend." So could you, Phil baby. This leads to more battles, as the new 7th Cavalry commander faces the Cheyennes and Sioux, greedy gold miners, mutinous troops led by an embarrassing Robert Ryan as a professionally-Irish sergeant, a Congressional committee looking for a scapegoat, and, finally, in 1876 at Little Big Horn, his own ego-spurred blundering. Filmed in Spain, the movie does contain some good action photography by Cecilio Paniagua, but Bernard Gor DOORS OPEN 9 A.M.
