Page Ten, Wednesday, August 18, 1965 THE ARC OS I A A A A A THE ARGUS SPORTS I -nUACING IOWLING TENNIS FISHINGO AL FISCHER Warriors: Team Spirit Pays Off Last Saturday, August 14 the 50th State Warriors of the NekarK Prep League were scheduled to go winging to Honolulu for a three game series with Hawaiian Police Athletic League teams. TTirough a pardonable conflict in dates, at the Honolulu end of the circuit, the Warriors were forced to postpone their plans. We say postpone because, after talking with Mrs. Lelaloha Rodrigues, the Warriors undoubtedly still have a collective eye cast toward Hawaii. Had the Warriors gone, it would have marked the first transpacific athletic meeting involving a Newark team.

Instead, many of the team will be in action this week as a part of the Fremont-Newark All-League Tournament. The Newark 15-17 division preps played at the F.B.I field last night and will be pitted against their Fremont Baseball All-Star opponents again tomorrow night at the Newark High field. SIX WARRIORS Six of the Warriors are on the 15-17 aggregation that includes players from Lido Faire, Oliveira-Arnold "and Newark Square. It ought to be an evenly matched tournament and will provide Township junior baseball followers with an opportunity to see some of the finest teen glovers in the area. The Warriors have been "big winners" the past two seasons in the Newark Prep League.

And to hear Mrs. Rodrigues enthuse about the team, they're winners off the field as well. They must be. Parents who will consistently go out to root for their charges and then bring some refreshments and join with them after the game, have a good thing going. While we don't condone rewarding a youngster at every drop of the bat, there certainly can be nothing but admiration for parents who can make the game a family affair.

While players on many athletic teams may go their separate way when the game is over, we are told that this isn't so with the 50th Staters. And it undoubtedly has reflected in their play BOUNCE BACK We understand that one of the Warriors' best games of the season came shortly after the boys found out they would bot be able to go to Hawaii! Snapping up a long-planned trip from a youngster can oft-times result in bitter reactions. It's a tremendous thing to see a group that will bounce back from desappolntment and adversity and play their hearts out. With boys like Lou and Jim Bettencourt, Nick and Rod Rodrigues, Tommy Lester and Bill Oliveira to count on, the prep leaguers have the nucleus of a winning team. SPORTING TYPE and Washington Township are the current leaders in the Tri-Cities Swimming Association prep football season gets underway in less than three weeks with grid drills slated at each of the six Mission Valley League schools Street and Smith's 1965 Football Yearbook, on the newsstands last week, has Stanford halfback Ray Handley as "cover man." Included in the teams covered in the issue is Cal State at Hayward.

Dead Heat For Top Eliminator "It's never happened before in six years of racing;" says Ron Lawrence, manager of Fremont Drag Strip, referring to the dead- heat run for Top Eliminator at the Fremont track Sunday. Roger Harrington of Richmond, and John Edmonds of Salinas drive similar Chrysler dragsters, and were racing for the Top Eliminator money. They crossed the finish line at precisely the same moment, as judged by the electronic eyes located at the line. The pair decided to split the Top Eliminator purse. In addition, Harrington earned Low Elapsed Time of the day, clocking the quarter-mile in 7.95 seconds earlier in the day.

Fans Invited Jo T-C Games (Jim Doutt, prime organizer of the Tri-Cities Baseball Association, authored the article below. The Tri-Cily league opened competition two weeks ago and will continue their Sunday schedule through mid- September. Games start at 2 p.m. and the public in invited to attend) There is now in the Tri-City area, a type of Sunday entertainment many of you are not aware of. That entertainment is semi-pro baseball.

Baseball played in remarkably good style, with as much spark, spirit, and desire to win as the major leagues. The only difference is that the players are neighbors, men who work and live in your town. And men who want and need your support and enthusiasm. The teams range In ability from very good to average, but then so do the majors. There are six teams altogether; the Washington Township Merchants, Bernie Vail, South Bay Realty, Tri-City, Fremont and Newark.

And credit for their existence goes to many, Al Fischer of the Argus, Dick Reigel from Fremont Recreation, Mel Nunes from Newark Recreation, Bernie Spencer Vail from Fremont, Dick Irwin, Joe Souza, Wes Sears and many, many more too numerous to mention. The reason this league was formed was not just so men could play organized baseball, but also it is for you, for the average citizen of the Township. Before the war there were several teams from our area that were well-known for their baseball talents and such names as Eutra, Amaral, and Souza still ring bells in people's ears. And many people feel that "those were the good old days, they can never be duplicated." Well, my fellow friends and neighbors, they have been duplicated! As any baseball fan knows there are 27 outs In a nine Inning ball game for one team. And on one occasion a baseball team from our area recorded 20 strikeouts against the opposition, was that one of our prewar teams? NO! It happened two Sundays ago, at Washington High when Merchants pitchers Bob Harrington and Ric Williams combined for a total of 20 strikeouts in defeating the Newark team.

And so in closing, may I suggest that this Sunday, after church, put your family in the car and come on down to either Newark, Washington or Irvington High School for a good old Sunday baseball game. Big hitters for the winners were Ed Santos, Ray Ayala, Joe Rodelo, Gary Presley and Stewart. All three had three safeties.

John Chacon's third inning triple with the bases-loaded proved the big blow for Tri-City, Every member of the winning team got at least one hit including Doug Harris, Darrel Eskeridge and Don Thurman. In another Tri-City contest at Newark High, the Washington Township Merchants tripped Fremont, 9-4, behind the relief pitching of Bob Harrington and hitting of Jim Doutt, Ralph Holding and Bob Strong. Harrington came on in the sixth inning to pitch shutout ball the remainder of the game, Doutt had a triple and two singles, Holding rocketed a 3 80-foot home- run with one on in the first frame and Strong had a double and triple.

For the losers, 41-year- old firstbaseman Leo Johnson ripped an RBI double in the second, player-manager Mike Lancaster clipped two singles and Ed Patton The Merchants pulled off two late inning double plays to keep out of harms way.
