Hard tops Run Su ay At Red wood Acres THERE IS AN OPENING for position of apprentice lion trainer in the Clyde Beatty Circus, which is coming to town for shows here Friday and Saturday Qualifi-' cations are: The applicant must be young, small and nimble, and physically fit Clyde Beatty, owner of the visiting circus, is the world's most famous wild animal trainer And don't make the mistake of calling him a lion tamer" Mr. Beatty says lions and tigers can be trained but they absolutely cannot be tamed Beatty started in the business over 3 years ago as a cage boy in England The prospect of seeing a man eaten alive is not a pleasant thought, but makes the act the biggest thrill in circus business Clyde Beatty has neVer been eaten alive but lions and tigers have taken quite a few bites on him In 30 years he has been attacked 25 different times Several years ago, after leaving Eureka, Beatty was critically clawed by the 700 pound lion named Buddy at Portland, Ore. Buddy is still in the act and sits on the top perch Lions raised in captivity are not used by the circus They are too dangerous for the simple reason that having been raised by humans, they do not fear humans Beatty uses only jungle reared animals and keeps these only a few years When they become docile or tired looking, Mr. Beatty removes them from the act For 15 "minutes before going into the a i a cage and for one half hour afterwards Beatty insists on being entirely alone and will speak to no one because of the terrific nervous strain When he comes out of the cage after an act he is dripping wet, having lost several during the performance He enters the cage unarmed fie has a revolver bu there are no live bullets used, only blanks The reason for this is that it is a 100-to-one chance that he could stop a charging animal with a bullet and would probably miss the a i a altogether and hit someone in the audience an ordinary kitchen chair is his best defensive weapon. He uses 20 animals in his act, mixed tigers and lions This is very dangerous as the animals are enemies During their first performance this spring and during the act two lions attacked and killed a tiger Mr.

Beatty stayed in the cage during the entire fight to keep the other animals from getting into it Mr. Beatty says no matter how well you think you know a tiger or lion, you still cannot trust'them The quiet ones are often the most dangerous At Torrance, California, where a zoo is a lion raised by a woman from a'cub was presented to zoo The woman visited the animal every day and 'fed it ice cream cones through the bars of its cage She was warned repeatedly Beatty and others that she should not do this She argued that she' had raised the lion herself, knew that it was perfectly tame and knew that it would never harm her One day as she handed the animal an ice cream cone through the bars, it reached out and with one swipe of its mighty claw tore her arm off above the elbow." An agreement reached here Monday calls for the publicly- owned Canadian Broadcasting orporation to shoot 13 games of the Eastern Canadian Big Four League and pipe them to NBC at Buffalo, N.Y., by microwave. NBC, providing its own commentary, will carry games live on a national basis.

It will be the first time Canadian football has received regular coverage in. the United States. The Big Four teams are the Montreal Alouettes, the Ottawa Rough Riders, the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger- Cats, last year's national champions. All the cities are in the eastern time zone, which means the telecosts will be on the air at approximately the same time as many S. cellege games are 30 MINUTES- TIME US! played.

American television fans will find that many players from the U. S. professional and college ranks preceded the TV cameras to In the coming season, each team will be able to have 10 American "imports" and will be allowed to dress 8 for each game. None of the rosters was finally settled. The talent battle the clubs have waged with the National Football League in the past few years helped them keep mum about prospects.
