19 UP) Two tankers slammed together in the harbor here late today, and one man is missing. One of the ships, the Santa Maria, burned and was abandoned. Rescue boats picked up 33 of its crewmen, two of them injured. Flames spurted from a billow of black smoke, and spread over the surrounding water after the Sirrah and the Santa Maria collided. Director Gives Version Don Walter, acting port director, said the Sirrah apparently dragged anchor, and drifted against the other vessel, which also lay at anchor.

Authorities listed the missing man as Eugene Hughes, 35, a fireman from Portland, Ore. Injured are Hank Leland, 36, Rinnmintrtnn a mainte- nance man, and Edmund I Oliver, 36, Long Beach, Cal. Oliver, a fireman water tend er, suffered broken ankles when he jumped 12 feet from his burning ship to a rescue boat. He said he was painting an engine room at the time of the collision. "I don't know what happened.

Then I heard the general alarm. got my life jacket, and went to the boiler room to assist the second engineer. Told to Abandon Ship "Smoke was coming in thick thru ventilators. Donald George, first assistant, yelled and told us to abandon ship. I was working with Hughes the missing man.

I yelled, 'Let's get out of I could see the side of the ship was on fire. I ran and jumped." Leland also suffered an ankle fracture in jumping from the ship. George Sklivis, Oakland, Cal, a member of the Santa Maria crew, said he was at the wheel at the time of the collision. He said he had just come on duty and the ship was "dead in the water." He said he heard two whistle blasts for a hard turn to port left and then orders for full astern. Officials said it is believed the Santa Maria carried a crew of 39, headed by Capt Austin Tomper.

The number in the crew of the Sirrah was not immediately known. Sirrah Pulls Away The two tankers appeared to drift together for a time, en-eulfed in flame and smoke. the Sirrah pulled away. It radioed its starboard side was damaged, and it had water in the forward ballast tank. The crew, which is still aboard, planned to wait for the incoming tide in the morning.

Apparently, the crewmen didn't want to risk trying to bring the ship in while the Santa Maria was still burning. Three hours after the fire started, the Santa Maria was a scorched hulk. The 550-foot vessel seemed to be a total loss. Sirrah Carries Fuel The Sirrah carried jet air craft fuel. The Santa Maria was loaded with miscellaneous petroleum products.

Each could carry 135,000 barrels, Walter said. The Sirrah, owned by the Shell Oil company, came in late yesterday and anchored, waiting to be unloaded. The Santa Maria, owned by tne Union Oil company, sailed in this afternoon. N. U.
