In addition "to sending out some 750,000 catalogs--a year, the May company maintains 34 ot Its own stores In three states- Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri- find has thousands dl dealers displaying racks ol garden seeds. The big May operation In Southwest Iowa Is a packaging process.

The company buys most pf its nursery stock from Mount Arbor nurseries in Shenandoah, The two firms have an Interlocking directorate. Wide Growing Program 1 But bulbs and seeds from all over the world are shipped Into Shenandodah lor testing and packaging. Many bulbs come from Holland and France. Seed lor sweet corn and garden peas come from the Snake river Valley in Idaho. Beet seeds are a California crop.

Cabbage and cauliflower seeds come from the Pacific northwest and the majority ol -flower seeds from California. Some flower seeds come from Colorado, and Japan furnishes most seeds for the double petunia, according to John Topham, manager ol May's garden seed division. The May company contracts with growers all over the world to supply this seed. When it arrives in Shenandoah It undergoes a triple-testing program in the laboratory, in test gardens and on the table. Germination ol the seed is tested In a laboratory supervised by R.

W. Schllsk He makes sure the seed is capable ol producing a plant, Test In Gardens Samples ol the seed are then planted In May's 76-acre experimental garden to check performance. And the fruit ol the plant Is pa'ssed around the office lor the final, critical taste test on home tables. The May company samples regular customers to determine their needs and check on progress ol the firm's products. New seeds, according to Topham, are developed by the department of agriculture and various colleges and released to firms which wish to use them.

The May company began operating in 1919. Edward May is now president of the tlrm, which employs some 300 persons at peak season and has an annual payroll of $793,000. Development ol products begins ol seed begins when by Automatic Seed-lilHng Machines operated by Max Bopp, Leonard Gray and Roland Pulley. Machines fill packs with accurate measure, paste flap and fold it back. Filled packs are Sorted for Dealers and put in metal racks in a leased building away from the main plant.
