Tuesday, july 10, 1990 THE SUN TODAY 3E STUDIOS FLORIDA HI Nik) 0RIAM00 An exhibit of non-figurative sculpture ty. If all this seems a bit far-fetched, it really Isn't. There's no denying that Caro's sculpture, while it doesn't directly portray anything, nevertheless relates to human history and human concerns and puts the viewer in a frame of mind to read other works the same way. It Is also, If not positively romantic, at least possessed of an unquenchable idealism about the future of art and, by extension, of mankind (for if art Is to have a future so must we). Its bubbling confidence infects those in its presence with enthusiasm even for quite different works.

Not that that's necessary. The other works here don't need the Caro to make them look good; they Just look better with it around. In addition to those already mentioned, the show includes works by Joel Fisher, Jene Highstein, Steve Reber, Osaml Tanaka and a newcomer to Grimaldls, John Raimondi. One of the two Raimondis here is "Dance of the Cranes," the maquette for his 60-foot-tall sculpture at the Omaha, airport, the largest bronze sculpture in North America. liJll plaio GENERAL CINEMA COLUMBIA CINEMAS Wincopin Circle 997-9010 GENERAL CINEMA PERRING PLAZA Satyr Hill Rd.

the play takes place on a basketball court, you can take It either as an original Idea or as something you can't work with," he says. "And a lot of major theaters take It as something they can't work with. But when everything clicks and the cast is good, the play can be really mesmerizing." performance last spring at the lyos Angeles Theatre Center favorably Impressed people from "A Different World," and Mr. Lamont was given a short-term contract to write for the'show. Although he occasionally despairs at the slow pace of his career as playwright, he has written a dozen plays, three of them produced, and has won some recognition.

Last fall, he took the $3,000 first prize in the James Baldwin Playwrightlng Contest for his play "21st Century Groove," which will be given a staged reading in October at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Mr. Lamont, who was born in Baltimore, turned to writing plays quite by chance as a student at Marlboro College in Vermont in the 1970s. His creative writing teacher suffered a stroke during a semester, so the aspiring writer switched to a drama course. His enthusiasm about this new form inspired him to write and direct three plays while still in college.

He continued his study at the Playwrights Workshop at the Uni- versity of Iowa. He also served for a year as an intern with the New Playwrights Theater in Washington as part of the master of fine arts program. Jamandl Theatre In Atlanta gave the Baltlmorean his first big break in 1980, producing his "Black Play." The work subsequently was present- ed by Howard University and by the Lincoln Center outdoors festival in New York. i Mr. Lamont regards his plays not only as entertainment but as a means of creating an impact on audiences.

"I like It when something I've written' smacks people upside the head and says to them, 'You think you're ART, from IE Albrecht Durer. But whatever you can take from this Caro, or perhaps lay on It, it is like so much of Caro's sculpture unmistakably a work of dynamism and Joy, and It occupies center stage at Grimaldls like an ebullient Mary Popplns, who has Just flown in to wake up a group of slumbering charges. Mel Kendrick's "Cooper's Log" looks like nothing so much as a cubist ballet dancer. John McCarty's "Auroch" bares its stone breast by throwing back a dark steel cape whose folds ripple In the breeze. Ul-rlch Ruckriem's two untitled stone pieces stand at attention, full of potential energy.

Paul Daniel's "Saurla" wants to tell a story, perhaps of the past and the future, perhaps about the fate of mankind.
