THE SUN, BALTIMORE, FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 5. 1963 PAGE 19 M. WHITAKER BURIAL HELD Industrial Researcher, 92, Dies In North East North East, C. Whitaker, a pioneer in industrial research, was buried in St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church Cemetery here today.

Dr. Whitaker died at his home here Tuesday night at the age of 92. Dr. Whitaker, who retired as vice president and director of American Cyanamid Company of Wayne, N.J., in 1947, received the Perkin Medal "for the most valuable work in applied chemistry" In 1923. has received the Columbia University "Medal for lence" and 1950 Chandler Medal "for outstanding achievements in the organization and management of scientific research in the development of chemical industries." In 1955, he was honored by the American Institute of Chemists "not only for his scientific and technological accomplishments but also for his impact on the profession of chemistry and the thousands people who have benefited from knowing or working with him." Dr.

Whitaker, who was a consultant to American Cyanamid after his retirement, had lived here and in New York since 1939. This was his permanent home the last four years. He was born in Frazeysburg, Ohio, December 16, 1870. In 1898, he was graduated from the University of Colorado and in 1890 was awarded a master's degree in chemistry there. He is the holder of honorary doctorates from Colorado and the University of Pittsburgh.

serving six years. as a chemistry instructor University of Colorado and Columbia University, Dr. Whitaker joined the former Welsbach Company of Philadelphia as general superintendent in charge of production. He became professor and head of the chemical engineering department at Columbia in 1910. From 1911 to 1916, he also served as editor of the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.

From 1917 to: 1927, Dr. Whitaker was vice president for research of the United States Industrial Alcohol Company and president of its subsidiary, United States Industrial Chemical Company. He served as a consultant before joining Cyanamid in 1930. As the developer of Cyanamid's research operation, he played a significant role in the development of sulfadiazine and various melamine-related compounds. During World War II, Dr.

Whitaker assisted the Corps of Engineers with the Manhattan Project. Survivors include his wife, the former Mrs. Frances S. Culver, formerly of Baltimore; two sons, John Martin and Robert Martin: two stepchildren, Mrs. Thomas W.

Smith, of Stevenson, and Donald M. Culver, of Lafayette, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Kennedy Visits Ex-Colombia Leader Washington, April 4 -Mrs. Jaqueline Kennedy paid a brief call today the former President of Colombia, Dr.

Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fabian Jijon, brought her to Boston several weeks ago for operation. Maria Elena Going Home On A Long, Lonely Ride Boston, April 4 (PA tiny girl, clutching a huge white Easter bunny, a blond doll and a stuffed toy, limped up a flight of stairs and entered the plane. Everything was different here -and confusing; people used strange words.

Two weeks ago her father and mother had brought her from Quito, Ecuador. They had taken her to a place where there were other children, some of them in beds. Men in white coats and nurses looked at one of her legs which was different from the other one. Her "madre" and "padre" hading said maybe the doctors could help her to walk like other girls. Madre and padre came to her every day.

And then they stopped coming. Nobody would tell her why. A friendly man, Dr. Santos, who could speak her language came and took her to the house where his wife lived. Many dolls and toys arrived, and cards with writing on them.

Shiny Money And Candy Then her two uncles came. They gave her shiny money and, candy bars. Now they were getting on the big plane with her. They said she was going home. But hwere were madre and padre? She had asked and asked.

And nobody answered. Somebody she didn't know had brought her this funny, stuffed, animal for brother Jose. She was a big girl, 5 years old, and he was only 2. Yes, she would take it to him. But where were madre and padre? They weren't on the plane.

Peter's Church Funeral services for William J. Fromm, 80, a pattern maker and long-time horseman, will be held tomorrow at the Charles W. Kachauskas funeral establishment, 637 Washington boulevard. Mr. Fromm died Wednesday St.

Fromm was born on November 28, 1882. He operated a saloon in southwest Baltimore before prohibition, and worked as an industrial pattern maker later until his retirement. Catherine Hudson. Mrs. Hickman Rites Tomorrow Cambridge, April 4 services for Mrs. Martha Veach Hickman, widow of Harry Hickman, will be held Saturday at 2 P.M. at the Lecompte funeral establishment here.

Mrs. Hickman died this mornling in the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital after an illness of six weeks. She was 68. Survivors include four sons, Paul and Schuyler Veach, of Cambridge, and Carl Veach, of Miami, Fla. They are sons to her first marriage.

The fourth son is William Hickman, of Pine Orchard, Connecticut. Mrs. F. R. Wheeler Services Set Today Funeral services for Mrs.

Frances R. Wheeler, wife of Dr. Arthur S. Wheeler, of 702 Sussex road, Towson, will be held at 2 P.M. today at the William Cook funeral establishment, Towson.

Mrs. Wheeler died April 3 at Union Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was 49. Survivors are a mother and father, Mr. and Mrs.

BROADWAY SCHARG-IT Open Every Night 'til Easter Ex-Finnish Prime Minister, Tokoi, Dies In U.S. At Age 90 Fitchburg, April 4 (P) Oskari Tokoi, who became the first Prime Minister of Finland in la coalition government formed by Social Democrats in 1917, died tonight at age of 90 after a period of failing health. For a time after World War Tokoi was a refugee facing either a death sentence or long imprisonment both in his own country and Russia. his efforts, civil war Finland in 1918 after its declaration of independence from Russia.

As president of the Finnish trade-union movement from 1912, he sided with the "Reds" the German-supported so He became Minister of Necessities of Life in the so-called Red government, and in that role sought food for his country from Russia. The charges were promptly dropped after a hearing in Boston. He joined the staff of the Finnish newspaper Raivaaja in Fitchburg in 1922 and served until his retirement in 1949. He filled many speaking engagements. Criticized by some conservatives as a "traitor," he was hated by Communists, who tried to break up meetings where he spoke. Exonerated By Finland In 1944, the Finnish exonerated him of all charges and, on his 75th birthday, voted him a small pension.

In 1949, he and his wife were invited to Finland, where he received a hero's welcome. He later traveled extensively in Finland and was greeted by large crowds. Finnish leaders and Government officials visiting the United States went out of their way to come to Fitchburg and pay their respects Tokoi. Tokoi met his first wife, Jo- Raima, in the United States. She died in 1938.

He subsequently married Mrs. Eva Pearl Johansson, a widow. Tokoi published an autobiography, "Memories of a in 1947. He leaves his wife, a son, Lauri Tokoi of Fitchburg, and two daughters, Leila Quick of Lunenburg, and Mrs. Anne Anderson, of Cambridge.
