The robbers smashed an 8 by 12-foot window and leaped into the store, one brandishing a shotgun, a few minutes after closing time. They scooped up the day's receipts and fled. A witness who saw the bandits break the window hailed a passing sheriffs squad car and as the bandits drove off, Sheriff's Policeman Gordon Frierson gave chase. He fired six shots and the bandits fired numerous shots at him. Policemen David Kujawa and William Vallas of Park Ridge joined the chase.

The policemen lost sight of the robbers near Lawrence and Cumberland Riverside, until noon Wednesday. At Concordia Lutheran church. 32d and Home avenue, Berwvn, from noon until time of service at 1:30 p. m. Entombment Wood-lawn Memorial Park.
