AUGUST 12, 1990 THE SUN SPORTS 13C PRO FOOTBALL Falcons beat Redskins, 31-27, after trailing, 17-0 Caldwell agrees to 2-year dell; Grant is lone Redskins holdout down drive climaxed by Gene Lang's 2-yard run. The Falcons wound up with a 183-144 yardage edge in the first half even though they trailed, 17-10. Miller completed 1 1 of 23 for 157 yards before coming out in the second half. The Redskins, who had a lot of success last year with a three wide receiver set, played most of the time with their traditional two wide receiver, two tight end offense. Earnest Byner and Gerald Riggs shared the running back duties in the first half, with Byner getting 27 yards in five carries and Riggs 1 1 yards in six.

The Falcons came back with 10 points in the second period Including a 55-yard field goal by Greg Davis on the final play of the first half. The game was sponsored by the Carollnas group that is attempting to bring a National Football League expansion franchise to Charlotte. Thousands of balloons were re sive 76-yard drive that he climaxed with a 22-yard pass to Gary Clark in the left corner of the end zone. Clark easily beat Roland Mitchell, one of Atlanta's backup cornerbacks who was starting because Deion Sanders Is still "vacationing" and Charles Dimry Is ailing. That made it 14-0 and when Chip Lohmlller kicked a 36-yard field goal with 4:25 elapsed In the second period, the Redskins had a 17-0 lead.

There were fears that Washington's patched up defense would be blitzed by the Falcons' new run-and-shoot offense that Glanville calls the Red Gun. It turned out it didn't work until Renfroe got in. On four of their first five Red Gun plays, quarterback Chris Miller threw three incomplete passes a fourth was intercepted. Atlanta was called for holding on the other one. The Falcons finally got untracked in the second quarter when they put together a 13-play, 80-yard touch REDSKINS, from 1C After his interception, there was a scuffle on the sidelines and each team was called for offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Except for that, the Falcons stuck mostly to football although there was a minor shoving match in the second period. The game was a showcase for Renfroe, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Milling caught five passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns. At the outset, the Falcons gave no hint that they were destined to win the game. It took only 16 seconds for Redskins rookie Brian Mitchell to run the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Things then got worse for the Falcons. On the Redskins' second possession, Ryplen put together an impres leased at halftime as part of the festivities and a huge map of the Carollnas with the NFL insignia on it was displayed. Jerry Richardson, the former Colt who is heading the Carolina group, and his son, Mark, were interviewed before the game and were optimistic about the Carollnas' chances. Mike McCormack, the former Colts coach and Seattle Seahawks general manager is serving as a consultant to the group. They were' on the field before the game with Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice, the legendary former North Carolina running back, who performed the opening coin toss.

It was the first true night game played at the University of North Carolina Stadium. One of the banks of lights went out with 2:42 left in the second period, leaving one half of the field In shadows. But the lights came back on at halftime. Caldwell's agent. Steve Weinberg, argued Caldwell should gefaiaise because he signed a four-year, contract as a fifth-round draft pick in 1 986 and should make up for getting only $140,000.

Weinberg visited thcj team's training camp Tuesday but couldn't get the Redskins to Change their position. Grant, the Redskins' final' holdout isn't expected to show tip before the end of training camp. He's not worried about starting Job because the Redskins, havea rookie, Kent Wells, In his position. Grant probably can arrive just before the season opens and get hlg Job back. i Grant is being offered about $500,000 and wants'" 'about $800,000.

ByVitoStellino Sun Stall Correspondent CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Linebacker Ravin Caldwell finally capitulated and agreed to a two-year contract yesterday, leaving the Washington Redskins with one holdout defensive lineman Darryl Grant. Caldwell will report to the team's training camp In Carlisle, today. Caldwell, who made $140,000 last year, held out two weeks trying to get the Redskins to increase their offer of $225,000 and $250,000 with an option year. Caldwell offered to take a one-year deal for $225,000 last week, but the Redskins rejected it.

With only two weeks of camp left, Caldwell figured he had no choice but to accept the Redskins' offer if he was going to keep his starting Job. 1 fpr 4o) I J. til i 5 IXM Mil fflHi k' 55lPli (1 '89 TEMPO GLS "90 MUSTANG LX CONVERTIBLE 5 J0J- I) PER $1QQ PER I "Ti Zh0- Vh 43 MONTH IrJcJ MONTH '90 SENTRA XE '90 HARDBODY PICKUP And OrjnlrDl.
