STABLE OF 40 Trainer Has 12 'Babies' Ready For Meeting Laurel, March 18 fSpe-ctal J. Bowes Bond, Laurel race course's top trainer of 2 year-olds in 1962, will be trying for that title again with twelve promising "baby" thoroughbreds at the spring meeting which be gins Monday. At the corresponding meeting last year, Bond saddled four 2- year-old winners, including Ahoy, Rambunctious and You Rascal You. The latter three developed into top-ranking members of their age group 1962.

Bond does not excel only with 2-year-olds. He won more races than any other trainer at Laurel's last spring meet, and he will be going after leading trainer honors again with a 40-horse stable. Older Horses So-So With the exception of Ahoy, now a 3-year-old, Bond professes to having nothing exceptional among the older horses under his shed-row. The 2-year-olds are all' un-raced. "We bought some of them at the Saratoga and Keeneland sales," Bond said, "and some are homebreds." The two-year-olds are owned bv Dr.

Robert Levy, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pistorio, and Mrs. Milton Erlanger. They are by such outstanding sires as Sailor, Double Jay and Olympia.

'We wintered them at Aiken. S.C., Bowie and the Pistorio farm at Ellicott he said. Ahoy Arrives Next Week Ahoy will arrive at Laurel next week to point for the Chesapeake Stakes on April 13, and the Senatorial Stakes on April 27. The Chesapeake is run at one and one-sixteenth miles and the Senatorial is one mile on the turf course. Ahoy won four of five starts in 1962, including the Cherry Hill, Tyro and Great American Stakes.

Rambunctious, winner of six of his seven races and $101,076 last year, was victorious in tne New Jersey Futurity and the $100,000 World's Playground Stakes after beginning his career at Laurel. The vicUmvof an untimely in jury, Rambunctious is now on the farm, but Bond hopes to have him back in training during the Laurel meeting. 20-1 Shot Wins Lincoln Feature Lincoln, R.I., March 18 After the favorite and the fourth choice had fallen near the finish, the 20 to 1 Jets owned by L. P. Plunkett, won the featured St.

Patrick's Day Handicap at Lincoln Downs today. A first-time starter this season, Jets Flare scored by two lengths over C. F. Chapman's Albion Star at the finish of the mile for 3-year-olds. The second longest-priced horse in the field of seven, Jets Flare paid $42.80, $13.40 and $7.80 after completing the distance in 1:49 on a heavy racing strip.

Albion Star paid $4.20 and $3.40 after finishing 15 lengths before D. G. Croteau's Boykins, which returned $6.60 to show. The daily double paid $24.40, combining Perfect Mate, owned by Ralph Fillman and V. R.

Burleson Schedules At Least Five Meets Eugene, March 18 OP) Dyrol Burleson, former American mile "record holder, will run in at least five meets this spring, including one that may pit him against New Zealand's Peter Snell and the current American record holder, Jim Beatty. Burleson, "a University of Oregon graduate now in business in Eugene, has a best time of 3:57.6, made in 1961. His race against Snell, world record holder at 3.54.4 and Beatty, 3.56.3, would be May 17 at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Relays. Burleson said that in addition to the Los Angeles meet he planned to enter the Texas Relays April 6, Drake Relays April 27, and either the National A.A.U.

or the National Track and Field Fed eration meet. He would run the mile in those and said he expected to enter some half mile and two mile races in other meets. Yonkers Results FIRST THOT: S2.000; 1 mile. Sandra May (R. Cherrlx), $1.0, tM Shapely Louise Qt.

Promoters George Parnassus and Cal Eaton said the fights would be scheduled in the same order as the card which was rained out Saturday night. That would be: Welterweight chamDion Emilt Griffith and Luis Rodriguez.

Featherweight champion Davey Moore and Sugar Ramos. Torres And Cruz Battle Battling Torres and Roberto Cruz for the vacant junior welterweight title. Moore's manager, Willie Ketchum, voiced the opinions of most of the cast when he said: "There's no real problems. My guy will probably box a few rounds just to keep sharp. We'll keep an eye on his weight, nat urally, dui uavey was a nan pound under the 126 limit Saturday and he'll be about the same Thursday." "No seat," said trainer Angelo Dundee, somewhat literally, in referring to his No.

1 challenger, Cuban-born, Miami, Rodriguez, in fact, stepped on the scales in the promoters' office Sunday. He was dressed in slacks, sport shirt and regular shoes. The weight was 146, the same as the day before, 1 pound under the welterweight limit Rodriguez, a gay, care-free character, was asked if he had been doing anything strenuous in the way of exercise. Luis flashed a broad smile, nodded yes, and gave a demonstration. It proved to be his special brand of the twist dance.

Perhaps the most unhappy boxer in the group over the postponement was 21-year-old Cruz, the pride of the Philippines. Just Homesick He is just plain homesick, said his trainer, Deedee Armour. The handsome, tall youngster was missing his home and his young wife, an expectant mother, all last week. The delay simply compounded his yearning to hurry home. nt i nA rrao iiVL iaaj uuock wim fha ntcinnnAmanl slftimirtU It wished the fights could have been staged on schedule.

Unmarried Emile had his mother flown here from New York to see the fight. Griffith is an incessant long distance telephone caller. With his mother here, at least his phone bill will be reduced, his handlers Ramos is a stablemate of Rod riguez, and like Luis, an expatriate of Cuba. Dundee noted that he has waited a year or more for a shot at Moore and "a few more days won't hurt. Buchholz To Defend Pro Tennis Crown Cleveland, March 18 V-Earl Buchholz will defend his singles title at the 14th annual professional tennis championships here April 1-2 at the Arena.

Buchholz, 23, defeated veteran Pancho Segura in straight sets for the championship last year. He teamed with Barry MacKay to de feat Don Budge and Segura for the doubles title. Tournament chairman Bob Snv- der said invitations for this year's matches have been sent to world amateur champion Rod Laver, who has turned pro, and to Ken Rosewall both of Australia. fn 5 (s NORTH AVE. WANTSEXAM Seeks Check Of Liston's Knee At Miami Beach Miami Beach, March 18 ift Heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston probably will be ordered to return here from Chicago to face a physical examination by a doctor appointed by the Miami Beach Boxing Commission, Fred Aaronson, commission chairman, said today. Aaronson said under the contract the commission has the right to examine Liston, who claims he injured his knee three weeks ago swinging a golf club. Liston Goes To Chicago The injury set off talk of a pos sible postponement of the title fight with Floyd Patterson Doubts were raised whether the fight would be in Miami Beach.

Liston left for Chicago yester day and said he would undergo an examination there. "I want him back here," said Aaronson. "We have not stepped into this thing before because we weren't quite sure if anything was wrong with him. A lot of times, things like this happen to bally hoo ticket sales. We could have asked for an examination ear lier, but it seemed premature." Patterson made plans to con tinue training in Miami.

He said. Under the terms of the contract have the right to name the fight site. I've said it would be Miami Beach and I am prepared to wait for Liston here. This is a good fight town as any." Surgery Means Delay Dr. Patrick Barry, who treated Liston in Miami Beach, said it probably would be twelve weeks before Liston could return to training if surgery was Aaronson said the commission has 90 days from the time com mission doctors examine Liston to set a new fight date.

The fight was first scheduled April '4 then postponed to April 10, The commission chairman said if a fight date can't be set within the 90 days after Liston is examined here, then the contract with the commission is null and void. He said no action would be taken until after a Wednesday meeting of Liston and Patterson representatives and Al Bolan, of the promoting Championship Sports, Inc. "Let's see if they ask a post ponement because of Liston's in jury then and we 11 act from there, Aaronson said. Boland said that if another post ponement were granted, Miami Beach would have to be reevaiu ated as the site. He apparently referred to the smaller number of tourists in the summer months.

Sunday night he said, "I'm not calling the fight off. I'm living up to the contract. The only people who can call the fight off, now, or grant another postponement is the Miami Beach Boxing com' mission." pointed out in an in terview that under the contract terms he would get up to $1,000, 000 of Liston's future earnings if the champion failed to fight him ahead ot anyone else. He max- cated he would not let Liston off the hook.
