STATEMENT OF CONDITIONS In letter written to John It Ter- hune, president of the Liberal Life In surance Company, of Anderson, State Auditor John Blllhelmer takes the position that hla department will permit the organisation of corporate agency companies to take over that end of the life Insurance business that concerns itself with the selllns of the contracts. The question of agency companies has been a live lsaue ever since the failure of tha old State Agency Company, which was tne selling: corporauon of the suite Lire insurance Company. The committee which Investigated the Indiana Ufa Insurance companies made strong rocom-mendUons against permltUng such ajrencies to exust In connection with life Insurance companies.

This recommendation waa embodied In the bill before the last Legislature, supported byj the administration, and It waa largely because this prohibition was left out of the bill that passed that the Governor vetoed the. measure when It came to him for action. In the letter which Auditor Billhelmer wrote to President Terhune. he explains that he will permit the organizaUon and operation of agency companies whers such agencies are entirely independent of the company that the agency may represent, and where the officers and directors of the life company have no interest, directly or Indirectly, in the agency company. In other words, under the Auditor's ruling there la nothing to prevent the or ganlzation and operation of an agency company substantially similar to tne old btate Agency Company.

ASK A LITTLE MORE TIME. Life Companies Do Not Wish to Drop Special Contracts Abruptly. It I understood that the State Life, the Reserve Loan Life Insurance Company, tha Hoosier State Life Company and ths Majestic Life hava asked the Auditor to postpone the talcing effect of his demand that they cease writing special contracts and commuted premium policies. In his original letter, sent out on March 13, he aemanaea tnat tha companies cease issuing such policiea by AprU 15, and de manded that they notify him of this in tention by Arrll The Meridian Life and Trust la understood to have written the Auditor that it would discontinue writing these contracts at any time other companies were re quired to. ine etate Lire Das not written a formal reply to the Auditor as yet, but the officers, at a conference with the Auditor yesterday, are said to hava asked for a little more time.

As the result of these requests It Is thought that tha Auditor will postpone the taking effect of this order until June 1 or JuiyI. providing, however, that tne postponement Is for the purpose of permitting old series of such contracts to be filled out, and not permitting new series to be started. In case a series la filled out before that time, that company Is to cease writing these policies, and in any event will have to cease on the date finally set. -The fact that this chantro will mean an entire readjustment by some of the com panies is given as the reason ior neea Insr more time. Their rate books, estl mates and literature will all have to be made over, and some of the agency con-, tracts rewritten.

In view of these facts, it seems pretty certain that more time win do gran tea. One Effect of Dean One result, of the application of the Dean schedule In Indianapolis will be the bettering of Are risks down In the con gested districts. In all probability. The Dean schedule carries increases on tha downtown risks, and the owners of such risks, rather than pay the increases, will be anxious to get as mucn or a reduction by credits under the new schedule as possible. I In order to get these credits, the owners of the buildings will make various improvements needed, from an Insurance standpoint.

One. buildine that carried a rate of S2.26 before the application of the Dean schedule was raised to je.zi, by tne Dean acneauie as the building stood. After the projection up, through the roof of a fire wall, separating the back part of this building from that of the building adjoining, the rate waa reduced to J2.22, a little less than the original rate before the Dean schedule was established. a. Will Carry Out Special Contracts.

J. E. Klllen. secretary of the Indiana National Life, which within the last week relnaured the Central Union life, says the Indiana National will take care ot all of the special contracts that the Central Union has issued. Practically all of its business Is special contract business.

It Is probable that sneclal contracts will be issued until April lo. The Indiana National itself never issued aucb. policies. Stockholders to! Meet April 30. D.

Renlck, president the Central Union Life Insurance Company, baa sent ut to all of the policy holders of that company a letter telling thern of the proposed reinsurance In the Indiana National Life and calling a meeting for April 10. This is in accordance with the law requiring such notice to be sent, and will not affect the consolidation of the two companies, which, as a matter of practical fact, has already been made.
