He just doesn't get enough credit for the job he does. Jim Gilliam is an old pro one of the few on the club who have been thru the pressure of a stretch run like this.

But basically it's a young ball club that can beat you in a lot of ways. With all this, however, it's the pitching that I have to like the best. Seven men with earned run averages of 3.00 and better! That's my kind of pitching staff. Whether you're a Walter Alston man or not, you've got to give the manager credit. After all, if they lose, he's going to get some of the blame.

That's an old story. He has done an excellent job in spite of injuries to his players. The White Sox were checked by Steve Hargan and Don McMahon after the third. First of the 28 hits the Sox made 11, was Floyd Robinson's single with one out in the first. After Gene Freese flied out, singles by Romano and Skowron brought Birdie Teb-bets out of the dugout for a change. But Danny Cater and Ron Hansen singled off Terry.

The fourth run came in on Brown's fumble of Ken Berry's roller. Pizarro suffered his first denting in the second inning. Rocky Colavito started it with the first of his four consecutive singles. Leon Wagner and Joe Azcue singled for the run. Skowron's homer in the third inning, which restored the four-run edge, just cleared the ledge hi the left center field lower deck.

36 2 10 33 4 7 FOR LEAD IN CUBAN CHESS New York, Sept. 7 UPD Bobby Fischer, United States chess champion, moved today into a three-way tie for first place with Borislav Ivkov of Yugoslavia and Vasily Smyslov of Russian in Havana's Capa-blanca memorial tournament. Fischer's moves are cabled from here because the state department denied him permission to visit Cuba. Fischer defeated Gilberto Garcia of Cuba this morning in a match that had been adjourned overnight Garcia conceded on his 53d move. Fischer will play Ivkov tomorrow.

The three leaders have scores of 7-2. Cassidy Puts 3-Game Keane, manager of the New York Yankees, will be signed to a new one-year contract tomorrow the Associated Press learned tonight. A source close to Keane said the 53-year-old pilot already has agreed to Mays napping on one occasion, kept the Giants from making the score more decisive. Shaw, in the meantime, recovered brilliantly from the few brushes with trouble he encountered. But he did not finish, even tho the Dodgers got only five hits off him.

After successive doubles by Wes Parker and John Roseboro had him deadlocked, 1-all in the third inning with none out, he set down the next three men in order. Shaw struck out only four, but the strikeout pitch nevertheless was a big one for him twice. He got Jim Gilliam with Roseboro at third base to end the third, and he fanned Roseboro with two on and two out in the seventh with what he called "a hard slider the biggest pitch of the game for me." Eater Mr. Murakami Shortly after an announcement on the scoreboard proclaimed that a Japanese stage star from "Tea House of the August Moon" was present among the 48,576 to root for the Dodgers, the Giants trotted forth their own Niponese representative Masanori Murakami. Murakami, a left-handed relief pitcher, was summoned suddenly in the eighth with a runner at second base, lefthander Willie Davis at the plate, and two out.

Manager Herman Franks explained later, "I thought Shaw was tiring, and my catcher Tom Haller agreed that his deliveries were going a little high. I didn't want Davis to hurt us with one punch, and I went to a left-hander." It was a sound move, it turned out, because Murakami got Davis on a force play. Then in the ninth inning only a bloop double into short right field by Lou Johnson was of any consequence before Murakami retired Jim Lefebvre and Parker on easy plays to the infield and outfield, respectively. terms with the Yankees.
