"February" 1954 "A PROGRESS" Section 11--Page Three T1 ES," ENTEN NIA EDI TI ON EUREKA'T 1854-1954 They 'Were Rugged Sportsmen Back In The Cray Nineties One of the first known football teams in local history was this Eureka eleven of 1893, more than sixty years ago. This picture was taken at the old South Park racetrack (Broadway, and Wabash) on December 10th, 1893. The football field was inside the racing oval. Putnam, Dave Evans, R. Godfrey and J. Ryan. By tRe year 1904, football was being played at Eureka High school. This, team lost to Fortune, 6 to 0.

It wasn't until almost 50 years later that Fortuna won another game from Eureka. team was coached by Senator Arthur W. Way (first row, extreme left) and the manager was the late Dr. Joe Walsh (first row extreme right). Members of the squad were as follows: Front row: Coach Arthur 'W.

Humbbldt county had-hundreds of 'through the years, dating back from a period before the of the century. One of the early day teams in this area was this Samoa baseball club of 1907.
