10 - Section 1C CHICAGO TRIBUNE, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 19b5 GIRL, 13, DIES IN GARY; SEEK WOMAN DRIVER Witness Also Leaves the Scene Anna Martinez, 13, of 377 Jackson st, Gary, was killed yesterday by an automobile. Police sought the driver, a young blonde. A Gary park policeman, Paul Harrington, said he was having his squad car filled with gasoline when he heard a noise. He said he saw a girl lying In the intersection of Third avenue and Jackson street. The blonde, between 20 and 30 years old and wearing a brown tweed coat, was standing beside the foreign-made car. She called to Harrington to get an ambulance. He ran to his squad car to radio for help. When he returned, the woman drove off. Second Woman Drives Away Another woman drove up while Harrington was attending the accident victim, and said she thought she had gotten the license number of the other car. She drove off without telling what it was. Dies In Skyway Crash Edward J. Rowel, 35, of 446 W. 61 place, died last night two hours after his northbound car crossed a median strip on the Chicago Skyway at 103d street and crashed into a southbound car. Rowel was taken to South Chicago hospital where he died later. The driver of the other car, Keith Fox, 19, of 2010 Superior st., Whiting, was taken to the same hospital. He is in serious condition with head and internal injuries. Mrs. Lena Schuller, 57, of 104 N. Schoenbeck rd., Prospect Heights, was killed yesterday when the car she was driving was hit by a Chicago and North Western commuter train in Mount Prospect. Sheriffs Policeman George Mucciante said witnesses reported Mrs. Schuller turned south from Northwest highway into Mount Prospect road and, altho flasher lights were showing and warning bells sounding, drove into the crossing into the path of the train. Knocked 30 Feet The car was knocked 30 feet into a ditch. The train was slowing for a stop at the time of the accident. One man was killed and six persons were injured yesterday in a collision of two autos in Illinois route 59 one mile north of Plainfield road in Will county. James Talbert, 35, of Oak rd., West Chicago, driving south in route 59, was killed when his car struck a northbound car driven by Louis Hahn, 21, of 1222 Plainfield rd., Joliet. Hahn and the other persons injured, three in Talbert's car and two in Hahn's car, were taken to St. Joseph's hospital, Joliet Pedestrian Is Killed Bruno Rukstele, 51, of 4412 Wood st., was killed early yesterday when he was hit by a truck while crossing 42d street at Western avenue. The truck driver, Anthony Masella, 35, of 548 E. Bryn Mawr av., Roselle, told police that Rukstele stepped from between parked cars. Masella was charged with two violations. As of midnight Friday, 463 persons had been killed in traffic accidents in Cook county since Dec. 31. Of these, 266 were in Chicago, where 40,266 persons were injured in the same period. OBITUARIES George J. Manos Services for George J. Manos, 82, of 342 Gatesby rd., Riverside, will be held at 1 p. m. tomorrow in Assumption Greek Orthodox church, 601 S. Central av. Mr. Manos died Friday in Michael Reese hospital. He retired in 1944 after operating restaurants for 45 years at both the old and new South Water Markets. Mr. Manos was active in many Greek-American organizations and had been awarded the gold cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Surviving are two sons, Nicholas and John; and five grandchildren. Theodore H. Shulman Services for Theodore H. Shulman, 62, of 6221 Central Park av., will be held at 1 p. m. tomorrow in Temple Beth Israel at 4850 Bernard st. He died Friday in St. Elizabeth hospital. Mr. Shulman operated Ted Shulman Associates, labor relations and management consulting service, from his home. He was the founder and past president of the Sanatex corp., 2321 N. Wolcott av. Surviving are his widow, Evelyn; a daughter, Mrs. Sheila LeGacy; a son, John; a granddaughter; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Shulman; and two brothers. Mrs. Grace G. Lewis Mrs. Grace G. Lewis, 91, formerly of Evanston, died Saturday in Evanston hospital. She had lived in the suburb from 1918 until 1963, when she moved to a nursing home in Highland Park. She was a member of the Musicians Club of Chicago. Services will be held at 4 p. m. tomorrow in the Winnetka Congregational church chapel in Winnetka. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. James L. Barr; a son, Rear Adm. John S. Lewis ret.; and two grandchildren. Charles J. Herman Services for Charles J. Her man, 66, of 7241 Howard st., will be held at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday in the chapel at 120 S. Northwest hwy., Park Ridge. He died Friday in Passavant hospital. Mr. Herman was founder and co-owner of the Edison Lumber company, 6959 Milwaukee av., Niles, founded in 1947. He leaves his wife, Eleanor; a son, Robert G.; three grandchildren; three sis ters; and a brother. Jack F. Houlihan Services for Jack F. Houlihan, 41, of 1145 S. Elmwood av., Oak Park, a retired Oak Park police sergeant, will be held at 1:30 p. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 523 Lake St., Oak Park. He died late Friday in West Suburban hospital, Oak Park. Mr. Houlihan retired from the police force early this year. He leaves his widow, Patricia; a son, Michael; a daughter; Joanne; and his parents, Felix and Grace Houlihan. Maurice M. Stern Maurice M. Stern, 48, of 400 E. Randolph St., died yesterday in his home. Mr. Stern was director of purchases for the last 20 years for Electro Engineering Manufacturing Products company, Inc., 609 Lake st. Services will be held at 11 a. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 1300 Devon av. He leaves his widow, Elona, and three sisters. M.N. LAND IS SERVICES SET FOR TOMORROW Services for Maurice N. Lan-dis, 71, of 2234 E. 70th place, who died Friday in the Pres-byterian-St. Luke hospital, will be held at 1 p. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 7651 Jeffery blvd. He was senior staff engineer and metallurgist at La Salle Steel company, where he worked for 46 years. A graduate of Yale university, he also held degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, and the Sorbonne in Paris. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his widow, Paulette; a daughter, Mrs. Jenkins Kiedaisch; a son, Maurice D.; seven grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister. STEAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES Burglars who broke into the home of James Knoble at 4155 West End av. took a tap recorder, television set, radio, and coat, he told police. Deaths Elsewhere Frank Libertl, 71, who helped found the International Ladies Garment Workers union in 1910 and served the union and the national A. F. L.-C. I. O. speakers bureau in various capacities until retirement in 1960, and in recent years has been active in the civil rights movement; of a heart ailment, in Garfield, N. J. Jess Miller, 81, Republican leader of Richland county, Wis., who was nearing completion of his seventh consecutive 4-year term in the Wisconsin Senate and had served for many years as chairman of the Senate highway committee; in Richland Center, Wis. Henry Cowell, 68, composer and writer on music, known for musical innovations such as tone clusters which he achieved by pressing his arm on all the black or white keys in a certain range on the piano; in his Catskill mountain home near Shady, N. Y. Chan Pitts, 48, publisher of the Le Mars, la., Daily Sentinel and the twice-weekly Globe-Post and Floyd Valley News; in a hospital where he had been under treatment for two weeks after suffering two heart attacks, in Le Mars. James H. Kiernan, 81, Democratic majority leader of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, of which he had been a member for 51 years; in Providence, R. L I Mrs. Rowena Buck Mrs. Rowena Buck, 95, died yesterday in an Evanston convalescent home. She was the widow of Randolph Buck, former Chicago insurance man who died in 1933, and the daughter of Gen. E. Kir by-Smith, a general in the Confederate army in the Civil war, who later was professor of mathematics and botany at the University of the South in Se-wanee, Tenn. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. W. O. Coleman and Mrs. Eugene Ackerman. Services will be held in Se-wanee, Tenn. Alfred W. C. Wolf Services for Alfred W. C. Wolf, Hinsdale postmaster from 1953 to 1955, will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday in the chapel at 60 S. Grant st., Hinsdale. A lifelong resident of Hinsdale until his retirement 10 years ago after 40 years in the post-office, Mr. Wolf moved to Dundelin, Fla. He died there yesterday. He leaves his widow, Hazel; two daughters, Mrs. Allen D. Clineff and Mrs. Karl Hillmann; and four grandchildren. Lester Tice Services for Lester Tice, 74, 7325 S. Euclid av., who died Friday in the South Shore Community hospital, will be held at 10:30 a. m. tomorrow in the chapel at 2434 E. 79th st. A native of Green Top, Mo., Mr. Tice worked for the Rock Island railroad for 40 years, retiring as assistant freight agent. Surviving him are his widow, Rosalie; a daughter, Miss Betty Ann Tice, and two sisters. Charles A. Goepp Services for Charles A. Goepp, 69, of 5930 N. Fairfield av., a chef for 37 years at the Red Star Inn, 1528 N. Clark st., will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday in the chapel at 5303 N. Western av. Mr. Goepp, who died Saturday in Swedish Covenant hospital, was a member of the Chef's Cuisine association. He leaves a son, Dr. Robert A.; two grandchildren ; and a sister. Blomberg, 72, of 10751 Sawyer av., died yesterday in Little Company of Mary from inhalation of smoke during a fire in his home Friday nieht. His wife, Thelma, 71, is in the same hospital with severe burns on the upper half of her body. A. T. Mickle, 36, of 3500 Fulton st., was in critical condition in County hospital with third degree burns on his face, neck, hands and arms.
