Ephgrave John P. Ephgrave, 84, of 263 W. 16th Chicago Heights, retired coal merchant and banker, died yesterday in a Chicago Heights convalescent home. He was honorary chairman of the First National Bank in Chicago Heights. He formerly was Bloom township Republican committeeman.

Thomas D. White, 64, former air force chief of staff, died tonight in Walter Reed Army hospital of leukemia after a lengthy illness. Walter C. Sweeney, 56, former commander of the tactical air command, died of cancer tonight at the Homestead air force base in Florida, the Pentagon announced. The Pentagon described Sweeney as a significant figure in the development of the jet-powered strategic and tactical air forces. For seven years he was director of plans for the strategic air command SAC at Omaha. Sweeney was graduated from West Point in 1930 and during World War II participated in the battle of Midway and the first low-level bombing with B-29s against the Japanese.

In 1954 he led a trio of B-47s on the first nonstop flight of jet bombers across the Pacific. Sweeney headed the tactical air command from 1961 to July 1965, when he retired.
