Section 2 CHICAGO TRIBUNE, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1965 Nebraska Flashes No. 1 Power 4tfAe Brass Ring Batter Baffled Badgers, 37-0, Editoralist's big hate was the whip and no jockey equipped with one dared come within 10 feet of the son of Olympia lest they take their life in their hands. Another eccentric campaigner was Hasty House farms' Ruhe. LONGSHOTS 1-2 IN FEATURE AT HAWTHORNE BY FRANK SEGRETI Ideal football weather prevailed in our town yesterday with the temperature at 55 degrees. And, appropriately enough, a hard-driving 2-year-old bay colt, Williamston Kid, came charging down the home stretch at Hawthorne like a swashbuckling half back going thru the line to capture the $38,450 Juvenile Stakes.

Coming from last place at the quarter, Williamston Kid won it in a rousing finish. At the end of the mile and a sixteenth, Jockey Henry Moreno had the son of Piet, owned by Paul F. On his right days he could beat the best of them, like the afternoon he ran down the Kentucky Hawks Play Exhibition with Leafs Black Hawk fans will see their heroes in action for the first time tonight when the Hawks take on Toronto in Chicago Stadium. Since it will be the first exhibition game since training camp opened, Coach Billy Reay will 'be getting closer to appraising some of his young farm hands, whom he is using often to evaluate their talent. So far there have Jjeen several pleasant surprises in camp for the Hawks.

The Hawks beat Detroit, 4-2, then tied, 3-3, with the Red Wings, last season's first place finishers. John Miszuk, burly defense-man is pressing for a regular job and has shown Coach Reay plenty of class, especially on Derby winner, Hill Gail, to win Harry Trotsek Jack Hodgins the Equipoise mile. When de pressed, or whatever it is that troubles horses, Ruhe sulked, losing all interest in the race and more than not caused sleep less nights for Trainer Harry Trotsek. BY MAURICE SHEVLIN SOME thorobreds, not totally unlike some football or baseball athletes, are" almost as well known for their eccentricities as for' their natural skill. One such animal is Fred W.

Hooper's Alabama Bound, a self-willed equine which insists on acting like he's mad at the world. When in a proper frame of mind, however, Alabama Bound is the running-est kind of race horse, and according to Trainer Cotton Tinsley, capable of beating any man's horse. Head strong and opinionated, Alabama Bound often puts on a show for railbirds during normally uneventful post parades. During the summer at Arlington Park the Hooper enigma refused to accompany other horses the right way around the track and had to be escorted by his lonesome to the barrier. Even then he'd swish his tail, buck like an old cow pony, and otherwise glower at the outrider.

Fans have come to chuckle "we're simply betting on whether he's in a running mood or not," confident that once the gate is sprung the outcome rests simply with Alabama Bound's inclinations. On other occasions, including a try on the grass at Arlington Park, the erratic thorobred performed as if he loved the game, easily spreadeagling his opposition and hanging up some mighty fast times in the process. His narrow defeat by Chieftain in a sparkling mile run at Arlington and a recent sprint victory at Hawthorne stand out as brilliant efforts for a veritable "hot and cool" racing tool. Trainers and veterinarians are at a loss to explain his behavior. The sport is replete with such strange actors, most recent of which was Fourth Estate stable's quick starting Editorialist, trained by S. Bryant Ott.

Nebraska was rated No. 1 in the nation and the proud residents of The Beef State couldn't have been happier, sitting under a cloudless sky in 70 degree temperatures while Their Team exhibited the fundamental brilliance in blocking and tackling that make for championships. Chief among the Badger tormentors today was Fred Duda, a chunky senior quarterback starting his first game of the season.

The former Chicago prep star, who guided the Red Horde of Weber to a city title in 1961, ran 59 yards for one touchdown and passed 29 for another. It was Duda who drove the Cornhuskers in for their first touchdown after Tom Brigham fumbled a punt first blush the first time Wisconsin had an offensive opportunity. Dennis Carlson recovered the ball for Nebraska on the Badger 31. On first down. End Tony Jeter sprinted into the middle to take a right-on-the-button pass and continued to the 4 when the Wisconsin safety second blush rushed right past him trying to intercept the ball.

Abe's Hope paid $31.60 and $16.20 and Royal Course $6.60. Royal Course, which was shipped here from Michigan where it had taken its last five starts, took the lead at the clubhouse turn and maintained it to the top of the home stretch.

It had a four-length advantage at that point, followed by Le Maestro and Abe's Hope with Williamston Kid in seventh position. It must be said that Indiana never threw in the towel and fought to the last moment. The basic 6-2 defense employed by Indiana was not much of a problem to Minnesota. Hankinson sent his offense thru, around, and over the Hoosier defense.

Indiana, for a greater part of the afternoon, was trying to figure out the Gopher defense a five man line, with two interior lineman and a roving linebacker. Run S3 Plays It is possible that Minnesota has some backup men for Hankinson, but Coach Murray Warmath is not ready to reveal their identities as yet. Minnesota ran 83 plays, but Hankinson was at the controls of the scoring machine on all except six occasions. Coach John Pont of Indiana didn't take long to alter his game plan. He had announced that he would lean heavily on the quarterbacking of Frank Stavroff and the running of Reggie Woods.

Stavroff couldn't move the Hoosiers and Woods was ineffective in the early going. Gary Tofil generated a scoring spark for the Hoosiers and John Ginter, tailback in Indiana's wing formation, gained noisy commendation from the partisan crowd. Tofil completed 8 of 12 passes for 122 yards and his ability to throw the Gopher defense off balance kept the fast fading Indiana spark from being completely extinguished. Under the guidance of Walter Blum, the strapping home-bred daughter of Hail to Reason and Searching from Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs' barns took the lead shortly after the start of the one-mile race and never was headed. Blum merely shook his whip alongside the filly's head as she turned back every challenge and hit the finish line lengths in front of Lady Pitt. Third went to another slow starter but fast finisher Swift Lady.

Priceless Gem, which in her previous start had beaten many of the year's top colts, including Buckpasser, in the Futurity at Aqueduct, stepped the distance in 1:36 under 119 pounds. The victory was worth $85,000 and boosted Priceless Gem's earnings to $191,842. Time, :46, 1:13 2-5." Winner trained bv F. H. Merrill Jr.

He couldn't believe it. The fans roared as Wachholtz kicked another extra point pushing the score to 24 to 0.

There was more. The Badgers stalled again. Wachholtz took another of Fronek's punts and galloped 55 yards to the Wisconsin 11 behind a rolling sea of red shirted "Huskers." Charlie Cboo Choo Winters, third string fullback, carried it into the end zone in two attempts and Wachholtz kicked the point to make it 31 to 0. The final ignomy occured with less than 2 minutes remaining. Wisconsin lost the ball on a fumble, for the third time, Nebraska taking over on the Badger 32.

Ben Gregory another sophmore in three carries whacked over the touchdown that rang up the final to 37 points. The triumph was the fourth without defeat for Coach Bob Devaneys Cornhuskers. In it his team exhibited the steadfastness and finesse acquired only thru superlative coaching. It was victory No. 35 against only five losses for Devaney since he came upon the Nebraska scene four years ago.

Indiana turned in a steady advance for its first score in the fourth quarter, moving 91 yards in 14 plays, with Tofil passing to Ginter for the touchdown. The Gophers injected a little razzle dazzle into the proceedings and put their final score on the board with a play that had been written into the books only this week. Minnesota put the ball in play on its own 20 and moved to the Indiana's 29 on the ground, al-tho one pass was incomplete.

A 5 yard penalty temporarily stalled the Gophers. From the line of scrimmage on the Indiana 29, Hankinson passed out to Kramer for 9 yards. Kramer pitched the ball back to Colburn, who ran out of bounds on the 1. Ken last hit right guard for the touchdown. STATISTICS Indiana Minn.

Princess Perfect, WASHINGTON PARK RESULTS Last Night Ten- WASHINGTON PARK is getting ready to remove the halter from the Egyptian Trotting association's 37 -night meet which concludes a week from tomorrow. The session has been a competitive and financial success despite rain soaking blows from the weatherman.

The Homewood mile plant, in only, four seasons, has become a mecca for Chicago's harness racing fans. The Egyptian association's betting and- attendance marks are far above the figures posted by the Washington Park Trotting association in its inaugural early fall meet in 1962, first sulky program to be held on the far south side. Maywood Park, founding site of Chicago sulky pari-mu-tuel meets, is confident of making a. healthy addition to the 1965 wagering total during its six-week program starting Oct. 19.

The new 7 million dollar plant is certain to draw many sightseers. Racing Director Ted Leonard also "believes half-mile racing will be as equally popular as competition on the Sportsman's Park five-furlong strip and the mile track at Washington Park. The track's first objective will be to surpass the record single night mutuel handle of $719,292, set on March 30, 1963. Titus Haffa, Chicago industrialist and owner of Aurora Downs, now plans to seek dates from the Illinois Racing board at another track. The Aurora Downs clubhouse recently was destroyed by fire.

Winter racing, from December to March, was legalized in counties with less than 1 million population, but Haffa believes the state would obtain needed money if the meet is transferred. Maribelle Murray, Ohio State university graduate and daughter of William Murray, owner of the Bonnie Brae farm in Ohio, has joined the staff of Harness Racing institute. Owen Trayner, now with Florida's Pompano Park, is another former Maywood Park official who will arrive next week-end for the new west side plant's inaugural. If Chore Mosher, ex-general manager, shows up, the handle is bound to exceed a million dollars. Clure now is a television personality in New York.
