436-2320. KILLED BY BUS IN OAK LAWN Trymg to Get Shoe from Street Anthony Kasley, 6, of 9719 54th Oak Lawn, was killed by a bus yesterday in 95th street near 54th court in the suburb. His father, uerald, 36, carpenter, told police that the child was attempting to retrieve a lost shoe. The boy, a 2d grade pupil at SL Gerald's Elemen- tary school, Oak Lawn, also is at 10 a. m.

Monday in St. Ed-survived by his mother, Mary, mund's Episcopal church, 6105 36, and seven brothers and sisters. Police held the bus driver, William E. Woodin, 38, of 12018 Chicago's 1964 Traffic Toll Marshfield in the Oak Lawn station. Woodin was driving west in 95th st.

Miss Kathleen Kuffel, 17 of 254 School Wooddale, died yesterday in Northwest Com i i TTuf ee a Heights, of injuries suffered when her car struck a tree in Elk Grove Village Thursday. Miss Kuffel, a senior at St. Patrick's academy, Des Plaines, was driving alone at Arlington Heights road near Kennedy boulevard. The car went out of control and skidded off the pavement in the rain. Up to midnight Thursday, 428 persons had been killed in traffic accidents in Cook county since Dec.

31. Of these, 216 were in Chicago, where 34,418 persons had been injured in the same period. TEEN TO FACE COURT IN BOY'S HIT-RUN DEATH A teen-ager who admitted driving a stolen car which killed a 5-year-old boy Monday has been scheduled to appear Oct. 21 before Judge Daniel Mc-Namara in Family court. The bearing date was set when James Gately, 15, of 5830 Byron appeared yesterday in the complaint division of the court.

Gately surrendered Wednesday to Shakespeare police. He told police that he was part of a group of Steinmetz High school students who had stolen cars. Gately, a sophomore, said he stole another car after learn ing he had killed Gary Lee Salecker, of 6556 Cornelia' av. i SPECIAL GRAND JURY SWORN IN BY U.S. JUDGE A special federal grand jury was sworn in yesterday by Judge Joseph Sam Perry in federal District court.

It will inquire into various matters presented by the organized crime unit of United States Atty. Edward V. Hanrahan's office. Judge Perry appointed Paltiel J. Bach, 5614 S.

Drake an architect, as foreman. Hanrahan said the jury will continue at least 60 days. He said it is needed because there are more cases pending than the regular grand juries can I handle. Dr. Ida Langdon, retired educator and niece of Samuel Clemens Mark Twain who, in recent years, was a warm defender against charges of racial bias leveled against Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" and other 'books; in Elmira, N. Dr. Floyd Stewart, 90, a St. Louis physician for 67 years and a veteran of the Spanish American war who had charge of seven hospitals in Cuba with the rank of surgeon-major; in St. Louis. C. SPIESS, 79, DIES; FOUNDED STORE IN ELGIN Joseph Charles Spiess, 79, of 126 Cooper Elgin, chairman of the board of the department store in Elgin bearing his name, died yesterday in his home. Mr. Spiess founded the store in 1921. In 1959 he received the Cosmopolitan Distinguished Service award in Elgin.

He was one of the founders and the first president of the Illinois Retail Merchants association, a director of the National Retail Merchants association, a member the board of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce, and regional representative of the United States Chamber of Commerce. He was a former president of Sherman-Hospital Board Governors, and a member of the board of directors of the Elgin National bank. Mr. Spiess was a member of the Union League Club of Chicago. Survivors include his widow, Edna; a son, John four granddaughters; and a sister.

STORE OWNER SHOT FATALLY DURING HOLDUP A south side clothing store operator was shot and killed last night when he apparently resisted a holdup man who entered as the store was about to be closed. The body of Louis Tatar, 74, of 7628 Phillips owner of a women's clothing shop at 6451 Halsted st, was found in a room at the rear of the store. Police said the room was blood spattered and the disarray in dicated Tatar had fought with the robber.

Friends Were Waiting Tatar had been scheduled to join two friends, Herman Eren- berg, 7840 Kingston and Joseph Kallick, 8130 Essex Erenberg car across the street for a ride home. When he failed to arrive, Erenberg went into the store. Erenberg told police that in the store he encountered a Negro with a revolver. The gunman tied Erenberg with a belt and gagged him, then robbed him of 522. Goes to Investigate When Erenberg failed to return, Kallick started across the street to investigate.

Kalliqk told police he saw a man with a gun leaving the store, and just inside the doorway he found Erenberg, who had managed to get to his feet and was hopping toward the door. Erenberg told police the gun- man. was 28 to 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 155 pounds. HARRY NORDIN, DIRECTOR OF CHORUSES, DIES Harry W. Nordin, 81, of 302 Stone La Grange Park, died yesterday in the La Grange Convalescent home.

Mr. Nor din formerly was a music di rector and voice teacher in the Chicago area. He directed the Chicago Swedish Glee club and the Chicago Swedish Christian chorus, and was awarded the order of Vasa by the king of Sweden 1923. Before retiring several years ago as music director of the First Methodist church, La Grange, be held a similar position at Bethlehem Lutheran church, Chicago, and was a teacher at Wheaton college, Lyons Township High school, and the American Conservatory of Music.
