Before the start of the 1984 season, he spent several days in a program for alcohol dependency and said his trouble with alcohol was a major reason for his failures the previous season. "It affected my concentration mostly, especially when we were on the road," Martinez said recently. "It got to the point where I was thinking about what I was going to do after after the game, instead of the game itself. I blamed everybody but myself. I blamed manager Joe Altobel-11, 1 blamed catcher Rick Dempsey, and I blamed pitching coach Ray Miller," Martinez says once he realized his problem, all he wanted to do was apologize to the people he had held responsible.

"I didn't think I had a problem then alcohol does that to you. For the first time in my life, I felt like I had done something good for myself," he said. After 10 seasons with the Orioles, Martinez was traded to the Expos on June 16, 1986 for a player to be named, who turned out to be Rene Gonzalez. Gonzalez was also the player to be named when the Orioles traded John Stefero to the Expos, so Gonzalez satisfied two player-to-be-named deals. Martinez finished the year 3-6.

After the '86 season, he became a free agent, but there were no takers for a pitcher on the other side of 30 with a drinking problem In his past. Martinez started 1987 as a free agent with Class A Miami an independent team. He was re-signed by the Expos and assigned to Indianapolis of the American Association. Since rejoining the Expos in 1987, he's been their best pitcher, including a 16-7 record in 1989. Yesteday, Martinez didn't even come close to walking anybody.

He only threw as many as three balls to three hitters, both on full counts. He only threw as many as two balls to six other hitters. "To stand there and watch him work it was unbelievable," Expos shortstop Spike Owen said. The Expos ended former Oriole Mike Morgan's no-hit bid in the sixth inning with a leadoff single to center field by Ron Hassey, then scored twice in the seventh on two fielding errors by shortstop Alfredo Griffin sandwiched around a run-scoring triple by Larry Walker. Those runs also stopped the Dodgers pitchers' consecutive scoreless-innings streak at 38, tying a club record set in 1966.

He needed a good throw to first base on a bunt by Juan Samuel in the seventh inning, but he survived. He finally seemed to tire in the ninth inning. Leadoff hitter Mike Scloscia hit a hard fly ball to left field. Then, with two out, pinch hitter Chris Gwynn hit a line drive barely foul down the third-base line.

By then, Martinez's young teammates were more nervous than he was. "I don't think anybody wanted the ball hit to them," Grissom said. "What happened to me, I did not want to happen to him." Then on a 1-2 pitch, Gwynn drove a ball toward the right-field gap that hung up in the haze. To at least one person, it sounded like extra bases. "It was scary," said Martinez, who turned and stared at the ball. "I thought it was hit well. Then, it went nowhere."
