Red Bluff VOL.88 --NO. 177 DAILY NEWS Tehama County RED BLUFF, CALIFORNIA SATURDAY, MAY 29,1971 10 CENTS ESTABLISHED Red Bluff Schools Bonds Calendar Corning. Red Bluff Schedule sniwnAV Election Tuesday 7-8; Controversy Over Site Voters in the Red Bluff Union School District the elementary school district are asked to vote Tuesday on a proposal to issue $1,600,000 in bonds to provide new classrooms. Balloting will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

in two polling places, Lincoln Street and Jackson Heights Schools. It will take a two thirds majority of those voting to approve the bonds. The bulk of the construction is to be at the present Vista School site. A kindergarten complex will be built at the Jackson Heights site, and some changes are to be made at Bidwell School. Plans for the new classrooms have been in process of formulation over the past year and a half, but haven't attracted much public discussion until recently.

Within the past week, however, there has been considerable protest, principally against the Vista site, and that principally on the ground that it is too near the Red Bluff Airport Manfon Fun Tomorrow MANTON--Professional rodeo riders will be converging here tomorrow by car and plane to try their luck against top rodeo stock. The annual local battle between cowboy and animal will begin after a parade and barbecue, the latter, like the rodeo, at the Lassen-Oxshoe Ranch on the Manton-Shingletown Road. The festivities get started tonight with a dance at the Manton School. The school action begins about 9 and lasts until the small hours. The parade, which offers competition in several classes, begins at 10 a.m.

tomorrow at Ann's Diner at the west end of town. It will travel from Ann's to the Manton School Road. The barbecue crews will begin serving about 11 a.m. To make the time pass faster, the Santa Rosa Flight School. Red Bluff's new airport operator, will have a plane at Bruce Barren's Lassen-Oxshoe Ranch landing strip for flights around the hilly areas of northern Tehama County and lower Shasta County.

The ranch is about seven miles from Shingletown and approximately two miles from Manton on the Manton- Shingletown Road. Top rodeo riders, members of the California Cowboys Association, are expected to pit their skills against Dick Hemsted's meanest and fastest rodeo stock. The pros will be at a disadvantage, too, when they enter the arena. The stock only had to travel a short distance from the Hemsted Ranch near Anderson The riders come from throughout California, western Nevada and southern Oregon Local riders, professionals like the touring pros but working cowboys on ranches here, also will be after CCA points and money. Los Molinos Teacher Rehiring Upheld LOS MOLINOS--Mrs Carolyn Cropp will teach next year.

Mrs. Cropp learned she would be rehired by the Los Molinos School District when the seven member trustee board last night unanimously voted to accept a state hearing officer's report. The report, filed by Rudolph Michaels, recommended that the board rehire Mrs. Cropp since the basis for charges against the first grade teacher "did not exist." Mrs. Cropp, Los Molinos Elementary school teacher, was accused of failing to maintain a clean and tidy classroom; failing to provide a clear lesson plan that could be followed by a substitute teacher; refusing to teach a phonetic reading program; and failing to dresa in a manner suitable to the area's mores.

Michaels found each of the allegations "not true." When the votes were spoken, the crowd of about 60 persons loudly applauded the decision. The majority of the audience was clearly in Mrs. Cropp's camp and had lent its support to the teacher from the April hearing, through last Tuesday's board meeting and tonight's decision. The decision was to have been made Tuesday. SPRING HOUSECLEAf G' SWEEFSHOPPE Will Be Sunday MAY 402 Pine 527-0487 TO IMPRwFYOUR RED SCHOOLS See On Bac In that connection, opponents of the Vista site, and consequently of the present bond proposal, cite a letter by an aviation consultant of the Department of Aeronautics to the Bureau of School House Planning.

The letter reads: "An examination of the Vista School in Red Bluff revealed that while the school is under the airport traffic pattern, it has been functioning apparently satisfactorily until now and no new hazard would be created by an addition to the school. "However, it should be noted that the noise factor of aircraft being overhead frequently will represent a substantial factor relating to economic and environmental impact. It would be our recommendation, to limit additions to service facilities rather than additional student capacity." But Red Bluff school officials say that as a matter of fact there is no interference from planes at Vista school. Letter To The Editor Dear Sir: The writer of the above letter is perfectly right in encouraging every voter to give serious consideration before voting in the Bond Election June 1, 1971. The fact that this election is being held June 1 instead of April 20 has no bearing on whether a person votes yes or no.

Jackson Heights, although a lovely setting, is not suitable for the type of building our school board, educators, and Parent Advisory Committee have deemed necessary to educate our children. I am not an economist nor an architect but I am familiar with all the present sites including Jackson Heights. The area, in my opinion, does not physically lend itself to economically sound expansion. In no way could you house the present enrolled students of both Jackson Heights and Lincoln Street on the Jackson site. Anyway you look at it another building would have to be built.

The district already owns acreage at Vista and can economically acquire the needed extra. The Jackson setting would no longer be "naturally beautiful" after you cut down all the trees front to accomodate a parking lot, all the trees in back to double your building size, and turned 900 students out to play on what is left over You would end up with (Continued on Page 4) Ralph Ehorn Infant Dees In Chico Robert Samuel Ehorn, nine- day-old infant son of Ralph and Joanne Ehorn of Red Bluff, died Thursday afternoon in Enloe Hospital in Chico.
