You may have decried in her the forerunner of the heroine of "Baby Doll." Some of the characteristics of Mr. William's long plays may be discerned in these beginner's sketches: his attitude toward women, his awareness of the misfits, malcontents and frustrated people all too common in our society, his exploration of the sad, dark dead ends into which too many people are heading; also, his vivid, compassionate and perceptive writing style.

It's unfortunate for him that he was introduced to his largest audience with these early playlets, which don't do justice to his present stature. less, it was a fine thing that Kraft did, and I'm much concerned about report that this may 1 be the final season for one of television's brightest drama shows. The gentlemen who staged the detelecast of the Emmy awards for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, came another cropper, it serves them right. The prizes were meaningless, they accomplished and the time lag becomes increasingly ridiculous, things changed since January, 1957. The promised entertainment fizzled, and the viewers were given more evidence to the effect that the Academy, doesn't know how to behave before the cameras of the medium which spawned it.

Baltimore Television Programs Programs "The Kraft Television ter" did very well by Tennessee William's three one-act plays, and in SO doing performed a valuable service for those who take the legitimate theater seriously. None of the three has much intrinsic merit, but they are interesting, considered as steps in the development of the author of On a Hot Tin Roof" and "The Glass They were written when Mr. Williams was fledgeling, groping toward mastery of dramatic technique. There's no plot, no conflict, no suspense; in effect, all three amount to monologues in which characters of no great importance discuss their longings and troubles. In "Moony's Kid Don't Cry," the melancholy speaker is a former lumberman, (Ben Gaztransplanted to a city factory and tied to an environment he loathes by a slatternly wife, (Lee Grant), and baby.

In "The Last of My Solid Gold young Watches" the mourner is a shoe salesman, (Thoms Chalmers), who bemoans the low state to which the drummer has fallen in the Mississippi Delta. (There's kinship here with "Death of a Salesman," Arthur Miller's powerful and exhaustive treatment of the same theme.) "This Is Con- of Property demned" takes place on the wrong side of the railroad track in a small town Mississippi.
