NOVEMBER 10,1898. Wk told you so. Now give us a rest. Pkkparb to give thanks. Decision ia the soul oE dispatch and he who hesitates la often ltst.

Folly Is easily learned but wisdom requires close study from her devotees. A true gentleman is solid wood but the fashionable man is often only ve neer. The satisfaction In life Is to do well and leave others to talk of you as they please. Younjf men, who waste time should remember that later on time will waste them. rked has no respect for law and that is what is the matter with some county officers.

Wiiem England aud France get to the back down or fight 6tage, France will promptly back down. A good many men would like to have the victor's crown without the soldier's wounds and hardships. That Is a good point in our knowledge which marks where knowl edge leaves off and ignorance begins. Wiien the election returns are all the number of those who believe in the predictions for a cold winter will be largely increased. Few Americans have any call to throw stones at those Cubans who are clamoring for office, in Cuba.

Human nature 1 the same everywhere. Sematou Tiii.MAX, of South Carolina, now use his pitch fork for legitnMte purposes. He unsheathed it again in the campaign just closed. American trade is Increasing in all parts of the world, while that of free trade England is decreasing. That is what a republican tariff and policy Is doing for the U.

S. Tne war is over, but the football casualties are on the increase. How ever, oobody seems to be worrying themselves sick with sympathy for the players perhaps we should say combatants. If that other alleged discovery of a method to telegraph without wires bad been put to any pratical use. we'd enthuse more over Nicbolo Tesla's an nouncement that he has discovered a way to transmit electric power with out wires.

TnE democratic local papers con ducted the political campaign just closed, upon personalities and not upon part? Issues. They were afraid of the latter and the former process only developed the evil propensities of the editors who made the malicious at tacks. There is one satisfaction left in the campaign of 18'J8, over that of 181X1. Voters did not get so excited as to hate each other. They considered the issues with calmness, and could even speak to a neighbor who held a differ ent political faith, wltii a smile and not a frown.

The prospectus of the New York Independent appears in this issue of Tile Pkess. There is no better family paper published than the Indepen dent, and in its new form and at the extremely low price of $2.00 per year, it ought to be In every home in this county. Send subscriptions to this office. The big, hearty, healthy man Is a a continual irritation to his dyspeptic friend. Constipation Is the root of nine tenths of the sickness of men.

and of a large porportion of ttie sick ness of women. It can be cured easily naturally and quickly. Nature is con tinually working as hard as she can to throw off impurities, and to force out poisonous refuse matter. When there is an Impediment, Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets set the wheels work ing strain without any trouble.

They assist nature In a gentle, healthful. efficient way. There Is nothing vio lent about tlielr action, and vet It is Just as certain as if it were twice as certain as If It were twice as violent. "You do not become a slave to their use." They are different and better than any other pill for thecureof con stipation, headache and kindred de rangements. Almost all druggists un derstand this, and are conscientious enough to tell you so.

The drifgglst who tries to sell you a substitute Is not a safe man from whom to buy model ne. Send 21 cents in one cent stamps to World's Dlsnenssiry Medical Association, Buffalo. N. and re ceive Dr. Pierre's 1008 page "Common Sence Medical Adviser," profusely ll" is probably lack of will that prompts the Spaniards to say that they cannot And the way to get out of Cuba by January 1st.

If it becomes necessary, Uncle Sam wlUshow them jlie way, us he is fully determined to take possession on that date. In Ft. Wayne the two political par ties literally threw stones at each oth er, during the campaign just closed. They were the stones In the new court house, the republicans charged the democrats with paying too mucli, ig noring better and cheaper offers and accepting higher bids to leave a mar gin for the managers. The "palace" will be a "Jumbo" on the tax payers.

TriosE citizens of Porto Rico who have been holding public meetings and demanding the abolition of mili tary rule, seem to have shook off the characteristic Spanish slowness very quickly. Instead of being too slow, they are just a little bit too fast. Congress will, in due time, provide a civil government for them; until then military rule will necessarily continue. Congressman romnson took so much interest in the old soldiers just before the election, that he sent out franked letters dated Nov. 5, to many of the ex soldiers hereabouts, stating that he had called up their claims for pension, when they had no claim pend ing.

In these letters he censures Com missioner Evans for the delay in ad judicating pension claims. Such a friendly interest is marvelous. Spain will laugh to kuow that the Maria Teresa, former Spanish cruiser, recently raised by Naval Constructor Ilobson wlille en route for the Brook lyn navy yards, encountering a storm, November 1 went to the bottom of the sea, too deep for rcsurectlon. The storm rent the temporary repairs and she took water, but all the crew was saved. It Is a source of regret that all of Hobson's work has been lost, but the tendency of Spanish war vessels to go to the bottom of the sea could not be averted.

Editor Stoix, of the South Bend Times, regards this year's campaign as the most rational that Indiana has had for more than fifty years. He says people went about their business; there was no excitement, do acrimo ny, nocuttingand slashing everything was orderly and decent, as became a people who are capable of thinking and acting for themselves. He says candidates have saved a great deal of money that, under other circumstanc es, would have been dumped Into rat hole. It pays to be decent in politics as well as In private life. In every community there may be found among the loafers, some one who can be depended upon to Intro duce the stranger to the town and its people.

The Information obtained is not usually "orthodox," but it fre quently has Its influence.ln prejudic ing the best interests of a community. The best plan for a stranger to pursue. would be to ignore the advice and proffered of this c'ass, and turn to the solid business men, who are the pushers of the commun ity, and to whom society looks for suc cess in every enterprise, and the Infor mation thus received can be rcljed upon. The man who has nothing to do, but talk on the street corners, is usually warped in his judgment of men and events, and he sees things only through eyes beclouded with his own misfortunes or incompetency, and hence he seeks to make newcomers bis friend in misery, because he Is lone some, and being lonesome, he has noth ing in common with the live Interests of the place in which he lives. Be ware of the source of advice freely giv en by men incompetent to form cor rect opinions! A few comparisons will convince the most skeptical of the success of the republican economy of govern ment.

During President Arthur's ad administration our exports amounted to $3,000,000,00,0 and during Cleveland administration the amount was $319, 000,000 less. Then came Harrison's administration, and exports exceeded the Clveland administration, $780 000,000. Then came Cleveland's sec ond administration, and the exports were $81,000,000 less than under Harri son's term, and under McKinley's ad ministration the aggregate promises to exceed anything in the nation's his tory. The imports during the same time are even more striking in com parison, and under democratic rule, we buy more from foreign countries and send our money away, while under republican rule we manufacture more at home and keep the money In circu lation here. In 181)5, under democratic rule, our exports only exceeded our im ports by $75,000,000, and that mostly in bread stuffs, while In the last year.

our exports exceeded our Imports, $615,000,000, and embraced not only breadstuff and the fruits of our farms, but the fabrics of our factories and forges. We stand today, as a nation unmatched In the world's history, with our exports double that of our imports, and we are selling twice as much as we buy. Why not show your appreciation of this business prosper ity by surportlng the party that made this country great in war and in peace. Catarrh Caa Be Cared. By eradicating from the blood the scrofulous taints which cause it.

Hood's Sarsanarllla cures catarrh promptly and permanently because it strikes at the root or the trouble. The rich, pure blood which it makes. circulating through the delicate pas sages of the mucous membrane, sooines ana reouuas tne tissues, giv ing tnem a tendency to health Instead of disease, and ultimately curing the arrection. At the same time Hood's Sarnaparllla strengthens, Invigorates and energizes the whole system and makes tne debilitated victim or catarrh feel that new life has been Im parted. Why are soujo fulks never ready for winter? The virtue of prosperity is temperance.

Baconv Industry and frugality bring wealth oftener than luck or legislation. A fool cannot bear prosperity, neither can a weak man carry a heavy load. Now there Is talk of a change in the form of the flag, so as to give room for more stars. Don't be in a rush, the present form is good enough, and there is room for all the stars. The philosophy of Josh Billings might have been applied with force to the local campaign, wherein lie said: "I'd rather not know so much than to know so much that isn't "Kindness is the golden chain by which society Is bound together." This sentiment carried out in spirit in the social functions would build up a community, and make any town a happy place to live In.

OBITUARY. Mary Kirk wood was born in Lancaster county, April 16, 1810, and died at her home in Franklin township, DeKalb Oet. 30, 18U8, Aged 82 years, months, 14 days. She moved with her parents to West Moreland county, in 1S32, and again In' 1834 moved to Columbiana county, Ohio. While living there she was united In marriage to Brunson Snyder, November 1848.

Twoyears after her marriage she moved with her husband to Richland county, Ohio, af ter a short stay of two years she and her her husband again moved to Hu ron county, Ohio, in 18.10, remaining there for fifteen years, when they moved to Steuben county In 18(15, and after a sojourn of two years they mov ed to DeKalb county, where the deceased lived until death caused her spirit to take its flight to' the other world. Mrs. Snyder was the mother of four children, two of whom Laura A. and Thomas proceeded her in death, while Henry aud Mary remain to mourn their loss of a kind and af fectionate mother. She became a member of the M.

E. church in 18 14 and continued a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, and tried tc live a consistent christian all her life. She was a kind and affectionate wife, and a tender, loving mother, always ad ministering acts of kindness and love to husband and children, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to any one in the time of need. She possessed unusual strength for one of her age, and was able to attend to duty until Oct. 5, only four months before she died.

She was conscious until she breathed the last breath, and patiently waited until her good Mas ter should say enough. Just ten min utes before she passed away she re quested her husband to lay her over and then smilingly slept the sleep of death. 'Her spirit bid good byes to its earthly tabernacle at A o'clock a. m. Sunday, Oct.

30, and the funeral ser vices were held at the home at 10 o'clock Tuesday Nov. 1, conducted by ner pastor, w. itogei. iiie re mains were laid in their last resting place in the Waterloo cemetery. Some persons have noticed that those who refuse to go to church be cause the members of this or that church are so dressy, can always find suitable costume to attend entertain ments in the opera house, where pride has its full sway.

When ttie subject is fully analyzed, is it not true that these people refuse to attend church because they do not wish to, rather than because they cannot dress good enough. 1 Every cough makes your throat more raw and irritable. This condition places tue system in such shape that ir you are exposed to any one of the different kinds of fever you are sure to be affected by Jt.
