The Sunday Sun TELEVISION AND RADIO November 15,1953 PAGE 14 Section A fcmmIM IIIH BITll JOHN CROSBY'S COMMENTS mz tr. A KlVIQSTPr Radio And Television "pAMILLE," the first novel of the younger Alexander Dumas, may easily be one of the most terrible novejs ever written. As a theatrical vehicle, it's a different matter, having afforded a great many luminous ladies from Greta Garbo to Lilian Gish a splended opportunity to cough and pine and die in the arms of countless young lovers. "Camille" was written in 1848, in the middle of a romantic movement and in the best romantic tradition. If you examine not only the literature, which is a fairly accurate reflection of the time, but also the police blotters of mid-Nineteenth Century Paris, you will find that it was not at all uncommon for young men (or, for that matter, old men) to r.uin themselves utterly over pretty young courtesans with an abandon which seems fairly incredible now.

Special To Her Time Of course, a guy can still get into pretty serious trouble over a dame to this very day. But in fa pr: 4 1 xiv "i inimil wJl 'I more control over the destinies of his son than he has today. Also, a disastrous marriage in fho.se days could literally extinguish a young man socially, economically," and every other way. Sure-Fire Theater A bad marriage, hile it can still do a lot of damage, is hardly that serious a matter any more and consequently the scene lost much of its point. The last half of "Camille" has been surefire theater for a.

century now and even in modern dress, it was still a tear-jerker of unparalleled power. Much of this latter-day effectiveness can be attributed to Michele Morgan, a very fine French actress, who was imported here to play "Camille" and who breathed an awful lot of fire into some very tired lines. (If they'd put Camille into a Brooklyn accent, I'd have gone sloping off to the nearest saloon after the first five minutes.) Disease Ignored "How," asked a companion in front of the set, "are they going to get around streptomycin?" I rather wondered how they were going to handle tuberculosis in the light of modern too. Well, they ignored it. Camille coughed a good deal but there was no mention of TB and you rather got the idea that the girl died of a broken heart, more or less abetted by too many late nights at El Morocco.

In spite of all these churlish remarks, I'm happy to wish "Studio One" a happy fifth anniversary and many happy returns of the day. "Camille" is the two hundred and twenty-fifth production of this distinguished program hich has presented the works of everyone from Shakespeare to Bella and Sam Spewack, from Tolstoy to F. Hugh Herbert. In five years its audience has grown from 1.000,000 to roughly 23.000.000 which is an awful lot of people to see either Shakespeare or F. Hugh Herbert.

So what happens? The "Studio One" production of "Camille," which was selected as its fifth anniversary play, opens to the strains of "You're The Cream In My Coffee" in a Manhattan penthouse in what I gather to b. the early 30's. The adaptation from one century and one country to a quite different century and country was made by Thomas Phipps, one of the most prolific writers of mediocrity in television. The language of love, which in the book and the play is thunderous and heroic to that point where it is a little preposterous, has been reached in scale to the commonplace cliches of cafe society. Importance Wanes The great love between Ar-mand and Marguerite became 1 just another affair between a loose lady and a junior at Harvard, who has yet to come into his own money.

Ye gods and little fishes, when will television producers stop trying to impose the customs of another century on our times where they don't belong? Take, for example, the scene between the father and Camille, one of the big scenes in both play and book. In its time and place, a father had a good deal Baltimore Colls vs. Philadelphia fages Sunday, Nov. 15 2:00 P. M.
