Myrto has seen the full circuit of conversion. In her thirteen years on the high seas, the Liberty ship twice has been a dry-cargo vessel and once a tanker. When the ship was built in 1943 in Richmond, she was launched as the Mary A. Livermore, after a leading American suffragist and abolitionist of the last century. After serving in convoys and supplying troops in all parts of tne world during World War II, the Livermore joined other American-flag ships in transmit ting aid cargoes to foreign nations in the immediate postwar period.

When the Federal Government placed her along with thousands of others up for sale, she was purchased by the Cia Internaci- onal de Vapores, of Puerto Cortez, Honduras, one of the com-panies in which Stayros Niarchos has an interest. Converted To Tanker She sailed as a Liberty drv- cargo vessel until May, 1949, when sne was brought to the Bethlehem-Key Highway Ship Repair Yard to be converted into a tanker. At that time, tankers were in great demand to transDort oil in all sections of the world. As ne wsuoertankers werp rnn. structed and flooded the tanker market, the owners ripriripH in reconvert the Myrto back to her original form a Liberty dry cargo ship.

On her first vovaee in her re converted condition, the Myrto was one of several vessels that encountered extremelv heaw seas in the Atlantic Ocean and suffered considerable damaee and ran out of fuel oil. Assisted bv another vessel at sea, she was able to make it to Bermuda to obtain enough fuel to finish her voyage to the United States.
