Ckiokl Yesmterav His Saa Akira Kafea KaaiBara TsaukJ . TateMre Sasaki BTIRTDGELT HUNT The makers of ''Throne of Blood," the Japanese film now playing at the Town theater, believe that you can't have too much of a good thing. If fog is good for half the outdoor scenes, it will be twice as good for the rest If it is shocking to see a man in his death agony for two minutes, it will be twice as shocking if the next victim writhes for four. ' This "proves to be the undoing of what otherwise would have been the scariest movie since Dracula. Based loosely on Shakespeare's "Macbeth," the Elm describes the rise and fall of a primitive-minded warrior, first lifted almost to the top by his own prowess, then corrupted by his wife and by the lust for power, and finally hurled downward to a ghastly fate. All this is set forth with graphic artistry that typifies Japanese films. Every frame is a composition of transcendent beauty; every moment spent in the "Cobweb forest" and a good deal of hanky-panky goes oa there looks like a Japanese flower arrangement The subtlety of the backgrounds is effaced by -the relentless heavy-handedness of the action. The leading man's face is never shown save when he is grimacing, baring his teeth, or glaring insanely. No male speaks a line; he grunts it, shouts it, tears it from his chest and detonates it . The result is Oat, as. horror is piled upon horror, the viewer loses his capacity to be horrified. And in the end when the wife goes mad as a human head is brought into the banquet hall wrapped for mailing, and when the leading man meets his inevitably grisly end the audience is numbed less by terror than by boredom. -MOTION PICTURES- DOWX.TOWN MOTION PICTURES- DOWNTOWN nones prc"j"iz3- DO W8T0WN 4- COV.TTG.!i r- trSSXVZ9 SEATS ON SAU AT MOST MJC THLATTtS STATI urs JUNE 2 7 PETS.
