MANStIELDV RICK JASON Ml If a I EXPANDED HERE 2d Education Channel to Open Sept. 1 BY LARRY WOLTERS A plan to expand television courses transmitted to metropolitan Chicago area schools thru four television channels was announced yesterday by Henry F.

Hoppe, chairman of the Tri County Educational Television council. The expansion will be made possible thru the opening by Sept 1 of WXXW, a new educational television station on channel 20, in the ultra high frequencies. This station, like WTTW channel 11, is licensed to the Chicago Educational Television association, which long has been carrying instructional programming. Midwest Program on Air-borne Television Instruction M. P.

A. T. I. transmits school programming on channels 72 and 76, operated from planes flying above Montpelier, Ind. Because of the difference in Indiana and Illinois time zones, courses transmitted by M.

P. A. T. I. do not always suit Chicago school hours.

Beginning next fall these courses will be repeated later each day on channel 20. Thru the joint program worked out by C. E. T. M.

P. A. T. and WTTW-WXXW, 38 courses of instruction will be telecast to schools in the Chicago area. 350,000 Pupils Enrolled Approximately 600 schools with 350,000 pupils enrolled are now utilizing course offerings of C.

E. T. A. and M. P.

A. T. I. separately. The fall TV program will include seven science courses, six in mathematics, four in English language arts, social studies, French, and Spanish, all at the elementary level, plus numerous high school and junior college courses.

m. Miller has not decided what to put in at noon. Ed Sullivan has changed his mind about accepting CBS' call to extend his show to 90 minutes. Sullivan told friends that at 61 he has no desire to add more stress to his life. Pat Fontaine has left Today on NBC to go back to show business.

Maureen O'Sullivan, the actress starring in "Never Too Late" on Broadway, takes over the Today role on March 2. The WGN-TV Barn Dance has been sold to Procter and Gamble. WGN-TV's Art Institute color show will be repeated next season and films will be made available to schools. Bob Hope has signed Eva Marie Saint for his March 20 special titled "School for Bachelors." Hope plays the editor of a girlie magazine and Miss Saint a teacher. STAN MUSIAL is being paged by NBC to do play-by-play, with Joe Garagiola, of major league games this season.

Peewee Reese and Dizzy Dean do the job for CBS-TV. Twilight Zone is slowly sinking in the west. This is its last season. Stump the Stars, the most durable of TV quizzes, is coming to channel 9 starting March 8. It was last seen on WBBM-TV.

NBC is shaping up a series to be called It's a Funny, Funny World, featuring comics from all over the globe. It's supposed to be an answer to CBS' forthcoming The Entertainers, which will be headed up by Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, and others yet to be chosen.
