In the 1827 race. He induced his friend, Alden Sampson, to buy a Miller Special from Phil Shafer, another driver, a week before last year's race and started in ninth position in the lineup. Doggedly he climbed on up through the field of more experienced drivers, but It was only In the last filty miles of the race, the 186th lap, to be exact, that he went into the load. He finished the year as the driving champion of the A. A. A. This year he has the same Frank Lockhart car, and the same friend and owner. Alden Sampson.

In 1926 he did not drive in the Indianapolis race. In the 1927 drove a Cooper Special front drive into sixth place. In 1928 he drove relief for Cllf Durant. Before entering the racing business McDonogh did airplane wing walking and other stunt work for fairs and the movie folk. However, he can also drive to orders and it may be that he will do so in the coming race. Pete is the son of an indulgent father and when Pete decided to race be was provided a car. which he entered in a dirt track race some place south of the Ohio river drive, one of the Duesenberg boys' product, and to show that the mak ers bad made no mistake Pete brought the car home in eighth place, which is considered good for a beginner at inaianapous.

In 1826 he bought new Miller Special for Indianapolis, but in practice took sick and was threatened with pneumonia. The doctor refused to let him drive the car and Frank Lockhart, a kid from the west coast drove It for him and won the race. After that Pete bought a front drive Miller. but sold it later and drove other men's cars. i He was driving a Cooper Special in the 1927 race when he broke a front axle in the 123d lap.

Last year he drove a Marmon Special for seventy two laps, when a broken connecting rod made him quit. Qualifying average, 112.52 miles an hear. BOB UDONOGIL (Front Drive Miller SpeclaL) McOonogh is twentfc nme years old. unmarried and. callx Los Angeles home.

He first saw the Indianapolis 1928. In the 1927 race he started a Duesenberg which, went out in the twenty second lap. He then drove relief for Bennle Shoaff and these two put Sboefrs car into second place, with one lap to go when the differential went to pieces and they did not finish. In 1928. Babe drove a front drive Miller for Phil Shafer and at one time led the race, finally finishing in sixth position.

The Babe is a good driver and knows cars and the Indianapolis track. If the car he starts stays in one piece. Babe will get it through in good time. Qualifying average, 115.618 miles aa hear. JULES MOBICEATJ.

(Thompson Valve SpeclaL) Jules Moriceau is forty years old, married and lives in Paris. This is his first trip to the Indianapolis track as a driver. He was a mechanic here in 1919. His ear is the smallest one on the track, brinr of only seventy six cubic inches piston displacement and hav ing a wheelbase of but eighty six It Is a six cylinder. "Jules drives with the characteristic verve of the Frenchman, and it is not known just how be is liable to finish the race.

Qualifying average, 165.609 miles aa near. LOUIS ClURON. (Delage SpeclaL) Louis Chiron is twenty nine years old, not married, and lives in Paris. This win be the first race in which he has driven a Delage.v Last year be won a great many of the larger races in Europe in a Bugattl. comes highly recommended by Major H.

FRANK BRISKO. (Barbaeh Speeiahi Brisko is thirty years old, married and lives in Milwaukee. He has been racing on the dirt tracks of the middle west for thirteen years and this is his first shot at Indianapolis. His car is the one formerly owned by Dr. Shattuc, one time Indianapolis physician and race driver.

Qaallfying average, 165.857 mnes an bear. MYRON STEVENS. (Splndler Miner SpeclaL) Myron Stevens is married and lives In Los Angeles. He has never driven on the local track before, but has had experience on the dirt courses of the Pacific coast. RICKLUTE DECKER.

Richards Brothers SpeclaL) Albert Karnatx Is twentv four veara old. not married and lives in Detroit. This la his first trio to the Indiana. polls track, though he is a. good dirt irac man, Deing champion of Michigan.

His car Is a front drive, brought to the track in 1925 by Harry Miller. That Indianapolis is not unarmre clative of the value to the city of the 600 mile, race is shown by the whole neartea way in which citizens have come forward, with contributions to the 320,000 lap prize fund. S. OorrelL president of the Stuts Motor Car Company, and fmerson w. cnaaie, of the Emerson W. ChaiUe it Co realtors, as co chairmen. This committee was unusual in that it' held no meetings, gathered at no luncheons, met in no way at an.

In stead, the time consumed in the aver' age committee luncheon and meeting was put in the work of the lap prise aggregation and the result was more successful than that of any previous lap prize fund. Not only were no committee meet ings held, but the two co chairmen did not meet to discuss the details of the appreciation lap prize fund, as it is caned this year. P. V. Fltzglbbon.

He has been racing eleven years on dirt tracks and Is considered one of the best in that line. Last year he started a Duesle In the race and was leading the race when In the 186th lap something hap pened to his motor, some said the mechanics poured cold water all over It while filling the radiator.

He popped into the spotlight here in the 1928 race, when he came in a rank unknown freckled faced kid and pushed his Miller Special into second place as the race wore on to a close. PHIL SHAFER. (MUler Front Drive Special.) Phil Shafer is thirty seven years old. married and lives in Flint. Mich. He has driven racing cars in the Indl anapolis race for several years.

for west bound and from 2 p. m. to 6 p. m. for east bound traffic The Georgetown road (the west boundary of the speedway) from Speedway road to Thirtieth street will be closed to both north and south traffic after 450 miles of the race has been run.

It. will be used to empty auto traffic from the one gate to empty to the north and the other, to the south. Captain Jones in Charge. Traffic details have been in charge of Captain Lester Jones, of the traffic division of the Indianapolis police department. Major Louis Johnson will be in charge 'of the police detail at the speedway, assisted by Captains Walter Claffey and Jesse McMurtry and Captain Jones.

Lieutenants Ralph Dean, Fred Drinkut and Eugene Shine also will be on. duty at the speedway. Major George Greene is. director of safety at the speedway. Police officers will be stationed at all street intersections in roads leading to the speedway.

In addition to the police department. Sheriff George Winkler announced that fifteen of his regular deputies would be assigned to posts in and around the speedway. Four men will be on "duty in Major Greene's office where a sheriffs emergency car will be stationed. Eleven deputies will be stationed along' the roadsVi co operate with city and state police in handling traffic addition, Winkler will name twenty deputies. Sheriff Winkler will be at the speedway in charge.

As several listeners said last year: "The News broadcasting is perfect because the fact are presented in the same manner that news Is presented In the news It is the intention of The News this year as usual to present to the listeners of WKBF the progress of the incidental details. Several racing, figures, a ew minutes of band music now and then and summaries now and then by William p. Sturm, noted writer of race track affairs. be interspersed in the five and a half hour program.

Por the most part, however, the attention of the staff will be directed to telling the WKBP audience about the race, lap by lap. The station will go on the silr. at 9:30 The News, as in years past, win use a microphone in a broadcast booth at the pagoda "where everything of 17 flclal originates." However, rrJrro phone lines have been placed at ttra tegle positions behind the pits and as occasions warrant these microphones will be turned in to pick up the re marks of this or that track personal ity. The decision In using the broad east booth was reached when it was found 'that the roar of the motors the track frequently drown out the voices of speakers at the track. For several days The News staff has been preparing interesting facts in re gard to drivers and past races.
