They're the modern version teen-agers who monopolize' the telephone, squeal and swoon over the characters they select as their heroes, and dream of "going steady." There's also a bit about their baffled and bewildered parents, who are somehow or other, carried along on the tide.

Ann-Mar gret sparkles as the small town girl selected to typify her group at the farewell appearance of one Conrad Birdie, a hulking rock and roll singer who's been drafted. It's all to be televised, thanks to the bright idea of the fiancee of an unsuccessful songwriter. She feels that if he has a number sung by Birdie he'll make some money and can get his possessive mother off his back. There are complications, of course, but they're all sorted out before the -happy ending, which includes an amusing performance on an Ed Sullivan TV show, and which also, incidentally, proves that Mr. Sullivan can too smile, in spite of reports to the contrary.

The cast, most of whom were in the original version, handle familiar roles with ease, altho Paul Lynde overdoes things a bit, as he did on the stage. However, I think you'll enjoy Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Jesse Pearson, Bobby Rydell and especially Maureen Staple-ton as a mother only a son could love. The music is pleasant, the dances are spritely, and it's all amiable, light Super-Right Ground fresh many times daily.
