Chicate Tribune Press Service POMPANO BEACH, March 10 The weird world of professional prize fighting, a racket that would nauseate a rattler, continues to go downhill faster than Satan on a sled. Boxing's greatest need is no longer a gang of 1920 vintage press agents to holler up the attendance did not the commission halt Gay's psychotic tantrums and order an immediate rest to see if his pulse returned to the normal beat of near 60? With Telstar and closed circuit television affixing the eyes of much of the world on this match a match that already was controversial and subject to criticism the Miami Beach commission had a responsibility to exercise a vigilance never before exercised over a boxing match.

For the same reasons, Liston, his physicians, and his associates and managers, if you are able to unravel and identify all of the latter group, were also charged with the responsibility of informing authorities that Liston had been under medication. The bursitis may be a feeble excuse for a decision to quit and default the title so quickly that the Miami Beach commissioners might not have been aware of the mischief transpiring. Worse than that, the hiding of it was a fraud on the public. NOW COMES FLOYD Patterson, the former champion, hollering for a fight with Gay. Sport needs that about as much, as it needs a match between a girl wrestler and an alligator.

If Gay is as strong as his record is touting you to believe, Patterson's chin would crumble like a house of cards. the money I get as commission doctor, I'm not going to expose myself to that kind of treatment." Today, that senior physician, Dr. Alexander Robbins, told The Tribune: "I examined Liston in the presence of his physician. His physician said Liston was in excellent shape. Neither made any mention of bursitis or any other complaint.

I questioned Liston about the knee injury, which forced cancelation of the Liston-Floyd Patterson fight in Miami Beach last winter. Liston said he had not had any trouble. I found his blood pressure and pulse normal." This brought up another question for the commission physician: Hadn't he found Clay with an abnormally fast pulse at the weigh-in physical, a pulse of 120, and why hadn't there been a precautionary check on that? "Clay did have a pulse of 120," said Dr. Robbins. "That was consistent with his appearance at the time.

Clay was perspiring, jumping around, and excited. I would have been worried if his normally slow pulse had not been faster. Gay's normal pulse is between 56 and 66, and as I remember it, we found the pulse was 62 when he went into the ring." THE AFOREMENTIONED makes one wonder about the Miami Beach Boxing commission. Why was only casual mention made of Clay's pulse as in "excess of Why Because altho you may question Gay's ability, you cannot question the strength of Patterson's jaw. The rankest novices found the Patterson jaw an inviting target Ingemar Johansson proved it vulnerable.

Liston proved that the only thing more vulnerable than Patterson's jaw was Patterson's body. Liston twice knocked out Patterson in the first round. In retrospect, one wishes that Patterson could have lasted thru the first round each time so we could have seen if Tiger Liston would come out for the second round. The Illinois Athletic commission brought the first Liston vs. Patterson bout to Chicago despite admonitions that such a match would make the stock yards seem like a perfumery by comparison.

Still the fight came to Chicago. The excuse was that the taxes provided great revenue to our state. There's the answer: Questionable boxing and its questionable characters will be permitted to flourish as long as there is tax revenue and big purses from closed circuit television. But that is hardly the fault of sport It rather is a sad commentary on our present life; in sport, business, even government, today we find that money can accomplish almost anything. It even can destroy integrity.

for a fight, but for fumigators to remove the stench afterwards. It is not unlikely that next year the inventor of D. D. T. will be honored as the man who has done the most for boxing.

As the man who has done the most to boxing, one could nominate Charles Sonny Liston, the mild bull who squatted in the corner like a wallflower while forfeiting his heavyweight championship. Of course, there would be a write-in vote for Cassius X. Clay, the present front runner in the double cross derby. This violent essay has been in Sonny Liston BNMULLINS Who, mo WHENEVER PON'TCHA -EVER GET I FEELTHE SYMPTOMS COMING ONI PLAY rim spired by yesterday's revelation, in Miami, of more chicanery in the Liston-Clay championship bout that infected this state last month. Yesterday, one of Liston's personal physicians revealed that for two months prior to the match, Liston was given daily cortisone treatments for bursitis.

The physician told a Miami newspaper that he believed the medication was terminated a few days before the bout. He further admitted that he was puzzled by the appearance and demeanor of Liston during the fight So were millions of others, including the chumps who paid $250 for ringside pews to watch Liston, the Miami Beach boxing commissioners, and their physicians, all sit on their haunches at the termination of that controversial sixth round. THE MIAMI HERALD collared the senior physician of the boxing commission and yesterday quoted him as not suspecting that Liston had bursitis. The physician was quoted: "Liston was not the most gentle person to examine. He has a very nasty attitude.
