Hatch left the bench in August, 1962, because of HI' ness. Hatch was one of the mosl powerful and influential mem bers of Congress and often served as Senate spokesman for President Truman.

He also had a major role in early atomic energy policy, labor legislation, and public lands. He was an early supporter of international peace organization a concept which led to creation of the United Na tions. Appointed to Senate The son of a Kansas grocer, Hatch grew up in Oklahoma, studied law in Tennessee, and Carl A. Hatch rose to prominence in New Mexico politics as a lawyer and state court judge. He went to the United States senate in 1933 on an appointment from Gov.

A. W. Hock-enbull and was twice elected to six year terms, retiring undefeated. Sen. Hatch attracted national attention in 1938 and 1939 as author of the so-called Hatch pure politics bill.

Enacted in 1939, the measure imposed restrictions upon the political activities of thousands of employes in the administrative branch of the federal government Supported New Deal The New Mexican supported the major part, of the New Deal peace time program and backed President Roosevelt's defense and war programs. Hatch was born Nov. 27, 1889, in Kirwin, a small town in Phillipe county, Kas. His father, Harley A. Hatch, a native Ohioan, established a pioneer merchandising firm there in the early '70s.

When Hatch was 7 years old he moved with his parents to Eldorado, where he received his elementary education. Hatch left the grocery to become a printer's apprentice on the Eldorado Courier, a weekly newspaper. At 19 he became its editor. Admitted to Bar He entered law school at Cumberland university, Lebanon, where he received a degree. He was admitted to the Oklahoma bar.

In 1913 he married Ruth Caviness, a childhood sweetheart in Eldorado. They went to New Mexico three years later when Hatch established a law office in Clovis. Familiar with politics from the precinct up, Hatch became Democratic state chairman in 1930. Hatch was elected to the senate in November, 1934, to fill out an unexpired term and in 1936 was reelected to a full six year senate term. He was reelected again in 1942.
