Instead of listening to those "mighty monarchs of the air" of 30 years ago, millions rely today on little pocket transistor radios. They are useful at the ball game. Bob Elson explains the White Sox games and if a customer has an itch to learn what the Cubs are doing, he can pick up Jack Quinlan and Lou Boudreau on his transistor.

M. 5 NEWS rooms of boring professors. Godfrey The big attractions seem to be news, sports, and music. Arthur Godfrey and Lowell Thomas are still around, but most of the bigwigs of yesteryear are gone. That goes also for the queens of soap operas.

MANY personalities are popular mostly local figures. A few that come to mind are Eddie Hubbard, Wally Phillips, Paul Saliner, Howard Miller, Sig Sakowicz, Pierre Andre, Dick Biondi, Jack Eigen, Marty Faye, Mai Bellairs, Norman Ross, Jim Conway, John Harrington, Phil Bowman, Paul Gibson, John Doremus, Henry Cooke, Dan Sorkin, Art Mercier, Mike Rapchak, Phil Lind, Jesse Owens, and Johnny Erp. There are scores of others, each with a quota of fans. There is little left of the dear dead days of Rudy Vallee, Lanny Ross, and Baby Snooks. But the Metropolitan opera seems to go on forever, a regular feature of W-G-N radio.

A lot of quality music is heard nowadays, mainly on the FM stations. WEFM has long led the way with excellent recorded music, and WFMT recently won a Peabody award for its record on ADC Unwise A resolution by the Illinois Public Aid commission to warn mothers on aid to dependent children relief that they face jail if they have illegitimate children was termed unwise yesterday by a spokesman for the federal government. Miss Phyllis Osborn, regional representative of the bureau of family services of the federal department of health, education, and welfare, said that if the resolution were strictly enforced it could cut off federal aid funds to Illinois. The Government's Share The United States government now pays about 51 per cent of state's aid to dependent children ADC program. "We feel that the resolution is unwise on a number of points and that it is a remedy which will not get to the source of the problem," Miss Osborn said.

The resolution would violate the basic intent of the federal aid act, which is to. take care of needy children, she said. It would discriminate against the neediest children, she added. The Commission's Aim The resolution was adopted by the commission April 6 and announced two weeks later. Peter W.

Cahill, executive secretary of the commission, said the resolution would be brought up for discussion at the commission's next meeting May 11 in Carbondale. Grounds of Action Miss Osborn said federal funds could be withheld on three grounds: 1. Improperly excluding children from ADC benefits on a basis other than their need. 2. Leaving children in a home that has been declared unsuitable and from which ADC money has been withdrawn.

3. Referring material to the states attorney's offices for prosecution- which would violate the confidential use of information. "We share the concern of the commission on the growing number of illegitimate births and we are asking Congress for more money to help parents with these problems," Miss Osborn said. in the fine arts. The news is endlessly repeated on radio.

One station may have the news every half-hour but it may not be changed all forenoon. If TV commercials irk you, the raucous, repetitious, stentorian commands to buy on radio may drive you buggy. In this regard, FM stations show more restraint than most AM stations. Well, have a go at radio. You will be surprised if you haven't listened lately.

Nicholas Ferri, chief investigator for the secretary of state's Cook county office, said 32 investigators are making a constant patrol of used car dealers' lots and other places of business, seeking out violators. Ferri said "fly-by-night" and "shyster" dealers often transfer title of a used car dy-ect from the seller to the buyer, by-passing the transfer of title to and from the dealer. In such cases sales taxes are avoided.

Ferri said many used car dealers fail to keep proper records, misuse dealer license plates, and operate out of garages, filling stations, homes, and other addresses. 7:00 P. M. W-G-N Music Unlimited WLS Edward Morgan WTAQ Haven of Rest WCFL Music WBBM News; Mercier WIND News; Marshall 7:05 P. M.
