iyWIIIMl 8 Section 2 a CHICAGO TRIBUNE, SUNDAY, AUGUST 11, 1963 1 :53 AND1 :59 Along to a $74.80 Payoff jftp, Brass Ring-1 BOUNDING MAIN WINS FEATURE AT ARLINGTON Continued from first page Bounding 6 -fit sH. SM fei. Winning Bounding Main (right), with Jockey James Nichols up, comes up in stretch to win Arlington Park handicap yesterday at a $74.80 Hellenic Hero, with Bill Shoemaker up (left), finished second, but was placed third when B. Major, which had finished third, claimed foul. B.

Major was given second money. Hawthorne's Gold Cup nominations roster is one of the finest in recent years, numbering Kelso, Carry Back, and Beau Purple of handicap fame, and Candy Spots, Chateaugay, and B. Major of the 3-year-old corps. Long the only mile and a quarter stake race in Chicago, the Gold Cup is exceeded this year by the mile and one-half Lindheimer handicap on the grass at Arlington on Labor day. But the Hawthorne feature is a grand race every fall.

It also will be remembered as the event in which Round Table reached the top of the heap in money earned. Round Table won the race twice, in 1957, with Willie Harmatz up, and in 1958 with Willie Shoemaker aboard. It should be mentioned, too, that Kelso's victory in 1960, with Eddie Arcaro at the helm, had something to do with his being named horse of the year the first time. Kelso, is leading for this honor for the fourth straight year. Tad Atkinson opines that the longer the race the less important is post position.

It figures. Walter Blum, unawed by Shoemaker's presence, still is the toughest rider in America on a front runner. Walter reportedly plans to ride out the first two weeks of the Hawthorne meeting before shipping out for Garden State. The members of the press at Arlington wish to thank Mrs. Re in em an again for her thoughtfuhiess.

Attendance is dropping off at Arlington, not much, but it's noticeable. Could be late racing Movie star-art connoisseur Vincent Price took over Arlington's Classic club Friday, where Vincent "Ben Casey" Edwards left off last summer. Mean i. Spiegel R. F.

BeasMttar roll, William J. Schmidt, Steve Ippolito, and Harry Trotsek. J. Grant Scott, president of the Illinois Breeders foundation and an owner-breeder himself, isn't so provincial as to suggest that the above will prove the salvation of midwestern racing. But he does feel that it provides a most important trend toward centralization of racing in growing breeding areas.

"The Easterners are staying for the most part within their own hub, while Californians do the same except for this period at Arlington Park following the close of Hollywood Park. But our own local guard, so to speak, also has grown in recent years. These are people who live in and around Chicago and will always race in this area." Which is one reason Scott is hopeful that the Aug. 25 Illinois yearling sales at Balmoral in Crete will prove successful. FREE RIDES The consensus is that if Rex Ellsworth's Candy Spots runs back to his Classic performance in the upcoming Travers in New York, it will be "no contest," Chateaugay or not.

The Classic films show Candy Spots uncorking one of the most startling runs ever at Arlington as he looped his field within an eighth of a mile still under wraps, just breezing! PACING MILES IN STATE FAIR Midnite Hardy Sets New Season High Springfield, EL, Aug. 10 Special Midnite Hardy sent the 1963 Illinois State Fair's harness racing off to a sensational start today by winning the State Fair stake for aged pacers with an opening heat of 1:58 for a new season's record for a pacing gelding. Driven by Howard McCullough for Owner Charles Dean of Arthur, EL, Midnite Hardy came back to win the second heat in 1:59 25. Another season's record went by the boards in the stake for aged trotters when A. L.

Petty's Frisco Lad took the first heat in 2:00 35. But Frisco Lad broke stride at the wire in the second heat, finishing fourth behind Ann Scott in 2:01 35. Poplar Sonny outsprinted his six rivals from the gate to carry the challenging Rip Spangler wide around the far turn before allowing Billy Shuter's charge to take command. Rip Spangler, going for its fourth victory in a row went to the half-mile mark in 1:03 and maintained its lead until the 16th pole when Poplar Sonny came out from his second position on the rail to win in the final strides. Butch Harmony was another length back third.

Ranger Knight, which was starting to make a bid in the final turn, lost ground when Cape Horn broke stride in front of him to delay the colt's final drive, which fell short by two and a half lengths. It's a home team kind of growth, almost necessary in the face of increasing competition from other major racing areas and with new race tracks appearing on the scene, coupled with lengthened seasons discouraging the shipping in of name horses despite lucrative purses. Many Clinoisans not only race good stables, but are breeding their own as well as purchasing expensive yearlings at the nation's public auctions.

Mrs. Dorothy Rigney of baseball prominence now is a turf devotee. R. F. Bensinger of the bowling business has entrusted his big and successful stable to Arnold Winick, and James D.

Norris of boxing and hockey fame watches his steeds run under the nom de course of Spring Hill Farms, Inc. Modie J. Spiegel, the mail order house tycoon, owns the Alamode farm and insurance mogul Jack Hogan's stable is a regular. Add to them the ever popular Mrs. Russell L.

Reineman's fine menage. Then there is William H. Bishop of Anna, without whom Chicago racing would suffer greatly every season. Crowdus Baker, president of the Sears Roebuck empire, is another local owner-bredeer. The Charles H.

Wacker HI stable is racing at Arlington. So are horses owned by Illinois Racing board chairman, William S. Miller and member Don McKellar, while radio disc jockey Howard Miller has his own growing stable.
