Thomas TJledsoe, inspector for the Indianapolis Humane Society, smiled in criminal court yesterday afternoon, when Jurt'i Markey making a ruling in a tkjuor rae. 10 WOMAN AID HENRY EGELHOFF LOSES LIFE AT SOUTH SIDE CROSSING. VICTIM FRIEND OF FLAGMAN What is thought to hare been an effort on the part of Henry Egelhoff. sixty four fears old, of HOC Madison avenue, to save the life of a woman, yesterday afternoon, cost him his life when he wait struck by a west bound freight tratn, running: light, at the Belt and South Meridian street. The aocldent occurred about o'clock. Mrs.

Henrietta Hammond, 240 Bakemeyer street, was driving north in Meridian street, and had just crossed the tracks behind a freight train, east bound, which was disappearing in the darkness several hundred feet away. The buggy was on the track when hit by the west bound freight, which was backing at about ten mites an hour. She was thrown out, suffering bruised shoulders and head, and the buggy was demolished. Hurried to Her Assistance. Egelhoff who was walking across the track, hurried to her assistance and was run over by the caboose of the freight.

Hi head was crushed and his right arm cut off at the shoulder. The body was sent to the Oreenstelner undertaking establishment In the city dispensary ambu lance. Coroner LJurham was called ana is Investigating. Egelhoff was a saloon keeper at 1W4 South Meridian street. Mrs, Hammond's injuries were not serious and she was sent home by Dr.

F. Reid. 2221 South Meridian street, who was called. Flagman Did Not See Freight. Efelhoff was a close friend of John Gelger, the flagman at the railroad crossing.

Geiger told blcyclemen Delaine and Giles, who went to the accident, that he had not sen the backing freight because of the east bound train, which hid tt from his view. Before he could lower the gates both the buggy and Egelhoff were on the track, he said. Gelger is an old man and was much affected by the death of his friend. There were other witnesses to the accident The train was in charge of Harry Boles, conductor, 29 North Tacoma avenue; u. B.

Hartweli. engineer, 16 North Walcott street, and F. G. Pleever. fire man.
