The higher the per cent, the better, as the Impurities are simply detritis in the soil In garden use it wUl be well, in case of quicklime slaked at home, to sift it before applying it to the soil. A good time is as early in th spring as you can do It. It will not hurt, if the garden was cleared of rubbish last fall, as it ahould have been, to apply it over the top of the enow liberally. But if the garden require a furbishing first, do thia as early In the spring as it can be arranged and then apply the lime lightly, so as to allow th top layer of soil to get Impregnated, and when this is dug down, give a good duatinar over the dug soil before it is rakeL This will by the action of the rains, impregnate th layer which was dug up from the bottom, and you will hav a soil well impregnated with lime. There Is no advantage in putting on too much lime at one time, as the esces has no value, and may burn the roots of certain tender plants during hot.

dry weather. Persons having gardens large enough to be worked bv horse tools may apply the lime with an appliance which comes for that purpose, th same a fertilisers are applied to the furrow. This is usually done only i for th legume crops, and care mueti be used t'O setting the ma hin so as not to overapply. I have found no better method of "applying lime than broadcasting by hind, on small plota of ground. Care must be had in the use of lime In heavy clay soils, which usually have a surplus of lim already In their composition.

HOW TO HAVE A HOME GARDEN 1 By SAMUELr ARMSTRONG HAMILTON C'epyright, It IS, by Psblle Ledger Company. Why We Use Lime In Soil, Selene has demonstrated: that lime has no fertilising action on th soli; its function 1 to release plant food already in the soil and make It available, and to Sweeten olla which have become sour or "acid' from any of many cause. Lime is of more value to the families of grasses and th legume (bean, pea, etc), than to any' other. These will do practically no good In a soil which haa an acid reactions due to the fact that they require for their development the presence at their roots of soil bacteria, which will not live in acid soils. Thes bacteria, which ar of the beneficent kinds, feed on or rather development in humus is required In order that they may perform their functions.

But if the soil in which the humus Is put is strongly acid, the bacteria will not develop and the plants will not get the benent of their activities. There are various kinds of lime, or rather lime in various forma, accessible to gardener. The common quicklime ahould be used only when spreading over a garden, where it will bo allowed to lie to slake. This, however. Is a wasteful method of applying lime, as it then is In large lumps and can not be as well distributed over the surface of the soil as that which I well slaked.

There is a kind of lime put up In paper sacks known as "hydrated lime," which is good, and if of good quality Is the one I recommend. Second to this Is quicklime. Tikich ha been piled under cover to slake and which is the kind referred to in these articles a ar slaked" lime. There is little difference between the commercial hydrated lime and the home slaked, when of tho sara chemical content. It is not the fact, as some assume, that "lime is lime." any more than It niild Ka to aav that ''fertiliser is fer nary shaly loam it Is indicated at intervals of from three to five years, ac cording to the amount ised atany one time previously, it na iittie, it any, value used as a top dressing for growing plants.
