BISCUIT. COMPANY ere VEILED ATTACK OIIJEC, TAFT Senator Hale of His Own Party Makes It. President Roosevelt Knows When to Be a Quitter as Well as a Stand (By Special Correspondent.) Washington, D. April 14. The veiled attack made upon Secretary Taft by Senator Hale, a member of his own party only expressed the opinion of many of the most prominent republicans In each house of congress as to the fashion in which the secretary of war Is neglecting' his official duties for his personal political ambitions.

Senator Hale pointed out that the real head of the army was never at his post and that the chief of staff was in fact performing the duties of secretary of war. It was interesting to note that the only senators who came to the defense of Secretary Taft were men of slight acquaintance and short service in the senate. The scandal of the Taft campaign is likely to become acute. Not only has he utterly Ignored the duties Imposed upon him by the office which he holds and the emoluments of which he but there has been expended in his behalf an amount of money which perhaps has never been equalled in a pre conven; tlon campaign. It was estimated by the New York World at S800.000.

This amount of money plus the constant and the commanded devotion of all the federal office holders should certainly secure for him the nomination. In all probability he will have that nomination. So far the only serious setback to hie ambitions has been the action of Wisconsin in Instructing al 1 Usui 3 NATIONAL most unanimously Its delegation for LaFollette. But LaFollette who is the best democrat in the republican party has no chance of nomination, and appreciates It. He will go to the Chicago convention with the votes of his state to be cast as tie aeslres.

He has no affection for Taft, but la political beliefs he Is Infinitely further removed from any one of the other candidates. If the field should be, as it may, Fairbanks, Cannon and Foraker against Taft, it is inconceivable that the LaFollette votes should go elsewhere than to Taft whatever the latter'a weakness. And that he Is weak before the people every prominent republican politician admits. Some apprehension has been ex pressed by democrats who think thatj President Roosevelt would be a strong candidate that in the event of Taft's weakness being thoroughly shown to the convention, it might be stampeded for the president. That would seem to be aa entirely probable course.

But within a week I have had two unsolicited statements made to me by men not acquainted with each other and each of whom is an intimate at the white house. The first, a distinguished editor of a New York magazine returning from a lunch with the president said to me that without ouotlne Mr. Roose velt he could say with the utmost em phasis that no circumstances could arise that would lead him to accept another nomination this year. The second, a correspondent of sev eral western newspapers who is known as a white house pet, said that the president had told Mm that If nominated he would refuse, that if the convention renominated him over that refusal he would telegraph it re assemble and select' someone else. The opinion is growing that Mr.

Roosevelt will not allow himself to be stampeded even though the convention may be. i WILLIS J. ABBOT. Duters: Gold Medal Flour is the only The American Boy. 13t2 the 111 I fF' tn.
