PAGE 6 Mrs. A. N. Mouat Here After Thirty Eight Years Recalls Early Days in City Schools Coming back to Winnipeg after fen absence of 38 years was a revelation, said Mrs. A.

N. Mouat, of Victoria, a guest at the Fort Garry hotel, who lived here from 1883 to 1900. "It was just a little bit of a place, about 30.000 inhabitants, vi'ih high sidewalks of planks and deep ditches full of black water; now its very cosmopolitan, very grown up Jo me." As Miss Annie Currie she was a teacher in the old Carlton school torn down a few years ago to make a packing space. "I was 17 when I began to teach; now I'm 73. Many of my pup (Is have been to see me in the week we've been here." Mr.

and Mrs. Mouat are returning from a tour of South America. The Day of Slates Slates and pencils touk the place fit BfrihhlArft unit liwcp lpnf nnt books in the Carlton school. "When the children wiped off their slates the water froze, and they had to stand around the stove to thaw It. They kept their clothes in an outer room that got very cold in winter.

All thf wraps had to be brought in near the stove and warmed before they were put on." "There were no clubs in Winnipeg before 1900. All we had was the young people's sod ties in the church. Everybody belonged to them. We made our own entertainment, picnics In summer and sports on the river in winter. The mosquitoes ruined every picnic at River park or Elm park.

River park street cars had open air trailers and the mosquitoes trailed along, too, biting us all the way. Now I see you have a campaign to exterminate the mosquito I contributed last Saturday!" Mrs. Mouat counts herself a clubwoman today, belonging to the Women's Canadian club and the I.O.D.E. Teachers Taught Singing Winter outings were marked by the making of beef tea in a great caldron set on a tripod. "And we didn't have sandwiches with it, just the hot drink.

Hot dogs? No, I never heard of hot dogs!" Mrs. CUTS DURAIS STOPS CECTTBIMf. There was no cooking and sewing taught in the schools, but "we did have singing and physical training. The singing each teacher taught as best she could, on the do re me method.

A piano? Goodness no! But we did have inter school competitions and prizes. Yes, I know all about the greatest festival in the British Empire that you have now. It's perfectly marvellous." commented the teacher of 50 years ago. Mrs. Mouat recalled with a smile the beloved Major Billman, who would say to a youngster mixed in his directions: "No.

not that right fut, my boy, the other right fut!" It was always pronounced "fut," laughed the visitor. On their way across the continent now to Victoria, both Mr. and Mrs. Mouat find the West "wonderfully changed from the Great Lone Land as we saw it well nigh 60 years ago. Cities, towns and villages dot the plains now intersected by lines of railways where there was then but the Vellow Quill Trail extending 1.000 miles from the Red River to the Rocky mountains." Mr.
